That sucks....I have a '17 1500 Big Horn with the 5.7 and 132k with no motor issues (use Pennzoil Ultra platinum since first oil change and Mobil 1 filter)...Got an extended warranty after the factory ran out - good to 225k. Only issue was a recent alternator and tensioner pulley. Just found out there is a recall on a trans. control module......

Hope all works out, keep us updated!

I'm not saying this happened to you but there are times where the techs are either overloaded or they are just evil and they don't actually change the oil but they always bill for it. Some techs work strictly by the hour and some work by book hours.

Unfortunately, over the years I have found this can happen.

I got charged for radiater flush and it did not happen. Transfer case another time.

Spark plugs. The hard ones were not done.

I decided I will do all my own maintenance and repairs.

Unfortunately getting too old now. lol

So extended warranties for me.

Good luck!!!

If you want it done right do it your self. I have a few more years of doing my own maintenance.

am I missing something? What happened to 5 years 100,000 miles on the power train warranty? A '16 should last until 2021, right?

I missed the part about changing to 60K miles... my '14 had 100K and I thought that mileage part stayed the same...

60K miles sucks...

So, this is an odd one, I have a '16 Ram with the 5.7L with 66K miles on it. My truck is primarily a people carrier, with occasional trailer tows and pulling stuck vehicles out of ditches. Two weeks ago the engine locked up solid when I was driving down the street. No noises, rattles, bangs, nothing, it just shut down. The dealership verified that it is seized by trying to crank it by hand. The oil was drained and no metallic flakes or pieces were found and the oil had just been changed at 65K miles. I called Chrysler Care, the best they seem to have offered was half coverage of the engine replacement, and was basically told that this is a perfectly acceptable amount of miles before something happens. Along with if I ask for a rental or service loaner while the truck is in the shop, that will subtract from the amount of help the care manager is willing to help me with on the truck. Are my hands tied on this one or is there another avenue to follow I don't know about?

Do any of you people ever buy an extended warranty?

I dont think anyone would expect any current production engine to die at 60K miles, regardless of someone's belief in extended warranties

I bought MaxCare Lifetime just because, but again I was not purchasing it expecting my 60K mile old engine to seize. I was more concerned with the transmission and electronics.

I agree with you about not expecting the engine to go out at 60 k but anything man made regardless of what it is can and will break. I'm not made by man but I carry insurance in case of a breakdown such as my gallbladder going out unexpectedly a couple of years back. I was covered and it didn't cost me a penny. I bought a new 2019 Ram 1500 4x4 last year and I also have a lifetime unlimited mileage extended warranty on the truck. I'm not worried about any breakdowns, I may or may not ever need it but if I do it's there.

Im with you. That is why I bought MaxCare. Lifetime was only because of my driving habits....opposite of what you would expect...I put VERY FEW miles on my vehicles since my commute is so short. With that, even an 8 year MaxCare plan would be "lost" on me because I might have 40K miles on my truck at that point. So it was Lifetime or nothing.

Now, putting that much faith in FCA actually covering stuff a "lifetime" from now, Im not sure how that will play out.

Getting an extended warranty is still a crap shoot as to what it will cover and if you will ever need it. You may never need it and then you’re out that money for no reason. I can understand getting 1 with a used vehicle, but not so much with a new one u less you know that you have no idea how to fix anything on it or the desire to fix anything. I don’t believe you had a right to attack those of us that don’t have an extended warranty just because you bought one. Plus, this is now taking the whole point of his post way off track. I’ve said my peace and I’m done with this point.

OP, please let us know if you ever find out what caused your engine to lock up or if you did just walk away from Rams. I’d be curious to know the cause. I know you said that you would tell us if you found out.

I think the 2016s have a 5 year 60,000 mile power train warranty. You are just slightly over on miles. The fact that some ******* said it’s perfectly acceptable for the motor to suffer catastrophic failure at that mileage is pure *********. You will be out atleast 5,000.00. The dealer will nail U for labor, every nut bolt, seal, all fluids. I would consider taking it to another shop and have them find out what failed. They can probably do that by pulling the timing chain cover and oil pan. If it were moving parts you would have heard it destroy itself. It’s not going to silently go while driving....

Wanted to add, while I think that the vehicles of today should last longer for what we pay for them, buying a maxcare warranty for 3,000.00 is really cheap insurance if you plan on keeping your vehicle

Not normal AT ALL! Multiply your miles by 3 and maybe. Was it treated well as in oil changes and such

I believe he said that the dealership that he bought it from has done all of the oil changes and maintenance. Which makes it even odder that Ram isn’t doing even more after taking all of that extra money he gave them when he could have saved money by doing it himself or taking it elsewhere for maintenance. Something isn’t adding up in my head after being a Service Advisor in a dealership for years. Usually they help the customer out more in cases like this.

This.

I dont think its any fault of the OP, I still have a sneaking feeling the dealer messed something up and isn't fessing up. But again, without seeing what the dealer claims for our own eyes, we may never know.
