So I've brought this up before but I know noise diagnosis is hard over a forum, but it's bugging me again. So quick background. My truck has made this noise since I bought it new. I've told the dealer about it a few times, but never really pushed them on it, and now I'm past bumper to bumper. However the noise is while accelerating so it could be covered in drive train which I still have. It has gotten louder recently I've noticed so that is why I bring it up.

Things it is not:

  • I thought maybe it was a heat shield or my exhaust rattling but it is not. (pretty sure)
  • Its not a tick or lifter type noise, I've had that and had bolts fixed.
  • It's not aftermarket as it did it stock the day I got it new.
  • Don't think its tied to the engine as it wont do it in park or neutral
  • Not MDS as I can kill mds with my Pulsar and it does it either way.

1. It's hard to describe but sort of a metal sound can rattle. Almost like a ping but its not pinging. Not super loud if the music is on I usually don't hear it. If I roll down the window I can hear it but its almost more difficult due to wind and road noise.

2. It doesn't not make the noise when in neutral or park and revving. So therefore it has to be tied to the drive system making the truck move.

3. I can make it do it on command. To make it make the noise I need to be moving (40-50 seems to be easiest) When the truck has down shifted and is in a high gear, if I lug it and barely push the pedal lightly it will rattle rattle rattle as it slowly accelerates. If you push a bit harder it quits or gets hidden behind exhaust noise. It doesn't seem to do it in lower gears. Its not shifting when it does it, it remains in the same gear. More of a lugging noise.

4. The only time besides lugging that I hear it is if I'm way up in the RPM band. So if I'm towing up a hill, or really getting on it and am in the 5k rpm+ range it will do it real quick.

Its never seemed to have caused any issues with the truck. Nobody else seems to have this issue but me, as I 've asked around before. The only way to probably diagnose easily would be to have the truck on something like a dyno where you can get the drive line moving without actually moving so that you can listen and figured out where its coming from.

Any ideas? Torque converter? Transmission? Something fuel line related? Something electronic that happens when you hit the throttle? Like I said hasn't caused issues with the truck its just annoying and makes my truck sound more ghetto.

The rattle can sound when lugging it or high rpm downshift almost sounds like floating valves under load if it's under the hood.
Maybe bad cats (loose pellets) if it's more under the truck.

Sounds more engine area to me, but sometimes noises throw you off. Would the valve noise only happen under load? Thus why it sounds perfectly fine in neutral or park? That's what sucks about only being able to replicate while moving its hard to determine exactly where it is from.

A video would help.
Dealer can put it on a lift and run the driveline, maybe take it back and see if that helps pin it down.

My truck has done this for years... no one (including myself) can figure it out. Its like you said when you go to accelerate after a downshift but keep the pedal and speed steady it will make it... until you give it more gas or it shifts again. I have MDS off with a tune. Only thing that ever made sense was a garage said possible oil starvation. Depending on the season/my driving there are time the catch can gets full and my levels of oil will dip.

I have JBA shorties, and have had the exhaust checked. At this point Ive just stopped looking but would be cool if you figured it out.

Wow finally found someone with the same thing I assumed I had the only Ram in the world that did this haha. I have a catch can as well, come to think of it I haven't emptied it for awhile, and I'm due for an oil change. The noise seems to be getting louder in the last week so maybe there is something to that.

I've noticed if I tune my pulsar down its easier to replicate, because like you said it needs very light throttle. When I'm on performance mode once the truck kick harder it stops.

Yeah I've tried video a few times, the problem is its not quite loud enough to pick up very well, with road noise and what not. Although now that its louder right now than normal maybe I can get it to pick it up.

Its hard to describe what the noise is. Its sort of a metal sound but not really. I can make the noise with my mouth. Almost when you go to the dentist and they put the saliva sucker in your mouth with a little more of a metal noise.

I'm just trying a bunch of different things to reproduce the sound. Today while the truck was cold I tried. Wouldn't do it. Once warmed up and on the way back home I could make it do it easily.

Not sure if mine is the same as mine is more in the 2500 rpm range and up till it shifts up to 7/8th gear

Mine is very metallic tinny

Have done manifold bolts, its not lifters my only assumption on mine is the cats but haven't torn the y pipe off to check

Watched the video a few times but couldn't really pick up on anything that sounds like mine.

U- joints ?

Would think it would always do it whether hot or cold? From what i read U joint noise is usually at slower speed? My best if I have a very slight incline going to like 45 it will be pretty consistent.

I'm leaning more towards a bad cat, especially with no noise until warmed up.
Loose pellets.

Pretty shocked myself.. was always worried it was lifters but it isnt. Same thing, easier to make it happen if its a slight incline. I check my catch can pretty often and ever since I check the oil level weekly I havent had it, but prior to that I could make it happen on demand.

Wouldnt a CAT issue show up on an emissions test?

Huh wouldn't have thought of that, how often do cats go bad? Truck has 40k and is a 17. I actually sort of got a video today where you can kind of hear it.

I'm curious about the oil thing. I'm due (think I'm at 8k, I run Redline) and haven't changed my catch can for 3k miles. I checked my line today and I was on add. Granted when full my truck never hit the full line.

I started using my GoPro and attaching it different places to locate loose components or noise when driving. That's how I found the body mount bushing was loose on my 2020 2500.
If you can get it secured (zip ties work nicely) take it for a spin and move the camera a few times. Then review your footage and maybe you can eliminate some options.
(btw I'm in the same boat as the other guys here with thinking it could be your CATs)

Can you post the video? Just curious if we are talking about the same thing. Would be cool if I know someone else with the same issue.

I'll have to see. My phone takes 4k which is always a pain to compress to get small enough for a message board.

So I read on cats that if pellets are loose you can hit it with a rubber mallet to try to recreate the noise. I went under and smacked around the cats and some stuff with the mallet to see and nothing, sounds solid.

What's odd to me is how intermittent it is. Like this weekend I told the wife listen to this and tell me where you think its from, and I couldn't make it do it (truck was warm). So we go into a store, and after we take off again now its doing it again.

I have a shell with a bed mat so the next plan is to have the wife lay in the back of the truck while I make it do it for a sec to confirm that its from the front of the truck and not the rear. 99% sure its engine area but want to confirm.
