Tailgate Lock

Hey fellow Ram owners. New to the forum, been looking around for a couple weeks. Just traded my 07 Ram 1500 for a 09 Ram 1500. I was excited to have a locking tail gate but for some reason the keys I have won't lock the tailgate. Am I missing something? The previous owner made a copy of the key inside the fob, both unlock the door. Neither seem to unlock/lock the tailgate. Any ideas?

Tailgate could have been stolen or damaged and replaced, requiring different key.

A (real) locksmith can rekey the tailgate lock for you. I had a bad lock on a van door and a locksmith rekeyed a new lock for me in about 5 minutes.

The owner must have lost the real key for the doors, my bet it woulda worked. Call owner and ask if he has the key? or yeah re-key, bummer.

It might be disabled because the previous owner didn't want to lock it with the doors. I disabled mine due to leaving my keys with my tools in the bed under my tonneau cover while working. I don't want to risk losing my keys on a job so I just leave them somewhat hidden in a bin inside the bed.

Just pop open the cover on the inside of the gate and you can see the connections. If I remember right its held down by the Torx screws.

I thought about the possibiliy of the tailgate being replaced, but who knows.

I have the number for a reputable lock smith in my town, if I can not figure out something on my own I will call him

I'm pretty sure I have the original key for the doors. I won't worry about calling the previous owner.

Do 2009 Rams have power locking tailgates? If so I will definitely open the back side of the tailgate open to check the conections.

I unplugged mine under the bed thats the easiest place. Just follow the wires where they come put of the tailgate.

My 11 had a separate key for the tailgate.
