This morning on my way to work, I braked for a deer in the road. When I tried to re-accelerate, the engine revved and I got a message on the dash to shift into park and then back into gear. I coasted into the parking lot and when i put it in park, realized the engine had shut off. When I try to restart, it cranks over and will start briefly if I push the accelerator pedal. It makes an ugly clicking noise when the engine catches and dies back out. It's been towed to the shop but they can't look at it until monday. Any thoughts? Fuel pump? Engine blown? Powertrain control module? Timing chain? Pretty stressed about this. I do not have the cash for a new engine.

Addl info: I had brakes done 2 days ago and they had to do a lot of pounding to get the rear rotors to release. Could that vibration have damaged the fuel pump or shaken a ground loose?

Truck had been running fine but had developed some road vibration over the past 6 months or so. I attributed it to tires and was going to address before winter. Maybe related?

I know that this is limited info but I sure appreciate any thoughts from you guys. Happy Friday to me. Blah.

That is a lot going on there. Off the cuff, I would say it is going to lean on the transmission side as a shift circuit fault but what caused it is going to be where the deep diving is needed on this.

You got the 8 speed transmission?

The shift into park message sounds normal after a stalled engine.

Any check engine lights recently?

As a blind guess it does sound fuel pump related. Sorry for your issues! Keep us posted!

This makes me wonder if there is an inertia fuel cut off crash switch? I know a lot of Fords have them and they will trip during hard brake events.

Thanks guys. It does have the 8 speed tranny. No check engine lights ever. After work I'm heading to the shop and if they haven't looked at it yet, I'm going to check fuses and relays. Fuel pump would be a lot cheaper than an engine or tranny! 111,000 miles by the way. The thing that scares me the most is the noise it makes when I do get the engine to fire. Kind of sounds like someone stuck a pencil in a fan. I'll post results as we go.

No engine light but shop couldn't get it in today so no idea about codes. I started it again and it was really rattling and chugging before stalling again. I hope to learn more monday.

Engine is blown. 111,000 miles with very little towing. Always up to date with maintenance. This sucks. $6,479 for a Jasper re-man. I'm screwed.

Ugh, sorry to hear, Zen! Can you detail your maintenance regimen, if you have the time?

Might be able to find a usable engine out of a wreck.

Everything stock. As for maintenance, just oil changes. I'm having a 2014 used motor with low miles out in for way less money than the Jasper.

That's the way I would go.

That sucks. Was it a lifter failure?
Good point. Lifter and cam failure isn't uncommon, but a blown engine is, far as I know. Who told you it is a blown engine and what went wrong ? If they can't tell you, try a different shop.

Having a hard time understanding how a hard brake non impact event can cause a motor to go **** up?
