Got a 03 5.7 4x4 today in a trade, 100k miles, clean truck.. was told it had a rod knock.

So started it up, but it sure doesnt sound like a rd knock? ive had a few and they all go "clack clack clack" and increase with rpms, and are continuous...

This has rattling like sounds that come and go and change in sound and possibly location (front to back etc), at idle (cold engine) not a single sound.. def sounds like lifter tick.

Pulled dipstick and zero signs of metal in oil like a spun bearing.. Im a mechanic and have no probs rebuilding but wanna try get some ideas - also is it necessary to pull heads to do lifters? And are the melling replacement ones ok?

Anything else to look for IF its only lifters? Came with a K&N cold air intake - nice.
Check a 1 min vid here: (noises start at 31s, up till then perfectly quiet/smooth idle)

Well, I was a mechanic once, built half a dozen engines from scratch and been messing with cars, bikes & trucks since the 70's. I'm no expert on that motor but, I agree with you. That sure don't sound like a rod knock. Rod knocks I've heard don't go away and come back. That weird screeching sounds like a bearing or maybe a water pump? I'm stumped with just that short listen. I played it 6 or 7 times but, can't nail it down.

Where was the phone when you recorded it? Can you get a longer sample, from bith sides & front and back? Can you put a mechanics stethascope on it?

Sorry brother, I'm stumped. Good luck. I'll be looking for another sample from you. I hate being stumped.

That does not sound like any dad lifter(s) I have ever heard. I does sound like MAYBE a bearing in one of the pulleys in the fanbelt area. Me? I’d consider the water pump first and go from there.

hey guys thanks - yes i figured as well.. the screeching noise was def belt / possibly pulley, but the ticking rattling noise who knows.

I held the phone facing the driver front wheel well so the upper noises wouldnt interfere.

Guy on youtube had what sounded EXACTLY like a rod knock, clack clack, ran MMO. 2 days later sounds gone. That was a year ago, just replied still running strong 85k miles later!!

Check it out

That although VERY close to a rod knock still doesnt have the clack clack sound - maybe a stuck lifter for sure..

Might pull oil out and put in a top brand with MMO - not sure what weight the prev guy put in, but like i said oils SUPER clean.. not a single rod-glint in there (HUGE relief! for now)

That does not sound like lifter, but keep in mind I did NOT stay at a Holiday Inn Express at any time in the past year.
