Sorry for another one of these posts, but just want to run this by everyone.

I do have the exhaust manifold flavor of the tick. The dealer at first said it would be a roughly $2k job but luckily I got 7yrs warranty because of the truck being a certified pre-owned....just surprised that didn't show up in their system. So all is covered, just have to pay the $100 deductible.

Anyways, both sides have broken bolts and the dealer is telling me that they will have to remove the heads to extract the broken bolts. I've seen a few YouTubes where the heads stayed on. In a way I don't care since I'm not paying $2k, but out of curiosity, is the dealer trying to milk the warranty? Is it really necessary to pull the heads off?

The only thing I do care about is that everything is put back together correctly and nothing fails 1 day after my warranty expires that is linked to this repair because they didn't do it right.

I cant even fathom a scenario where they would need to take the heads off, maybe I am missing something. Maybe if the heads are off when they drill the hole, they can see if they went through fluid galley? I know some dyi,ers and some independents have drilled through the fluid lines, which sucks balls. Maybe that particular dealer has had a few techs drill too far? I can't believe they didnt find a better mouse trap then that as a solution, but like you said all you pay is delectable. Check all your fluids when they are done and for a while to make sure no leaks.

If you are that worried, get an extended warranty?

I've seen some reports of a bent pushrod or two. Maybe when the lifter roller turns sideways and changes the valve lift timing - don't know if Hemi is an interference engine.

I find it hard to believe they need to remove the heads to drill out the bolts unless they damaged it somehow. There's a company that makes a jig the bolts to some good bolts holes. It guides and centers the drill to help eliminate any screw ups. I'll see if I can get the name of the company. I guess one way you can look at it though is if they do remove the heads you'll be getting new head gaskets which is a plusScreenshot_20220804-170420_DuckDuckGo.jpg

Makes me wonder what they did if they want to pull the heads.

Don't be afraid to ask questions of them. Also, document everything you can. When you called, who you spoke to, what was asked, what the answer was, etc. Just in case.

I hope you get it taken care of, with a solid repair.

For 100 bucks I'll take the fresh head gaskets and new whatever else they have to replace while they are in there. Hopefully they will take a close look at the cam and lifters and decide they need to be replaced too. Water pump... serpentine belt.... new plugs.... etc.....

At a dealer? I would wager they wouldn't look at anything other than pulling the heads and slapping them back on. And obviously telling OP they need the fuel system flush and transmission flush and an air filter (without checking the current one). The usual.

Trust me, they aren't replacing anything they don't have to

I've had good experiences with dealers when it's warranty work. Of course that was all pre-covid and none of it was Dodge/Ram.

I guess one possibility is that they are following some "standard repair procedure" guide or as was mentioned, they don't want to accidentally drill in the water/oil passaged.
I have the truck back for now as they have to order parts and then drop the truck back off again. If it wasn't for the warranty, I would be taking the truck to my mechanic who I trust...oh and the 10% discount because I'm a volunteer FF :Big Laugh:

It’s possible they’re going to machine the heads to level and thus prevent a recurrence of the issue.

Maybe they just wanna pull the heads cus they actually suspect its lifter failure?

Not to diverge, if the fix is to just put new bolts on, can this issue happen again or are the new bolts a different material where they won't snap again?

Broken bolts are a side effect of the real problem, which is metal cooling rates and thickness of the stock manifolds causing warping. This in turn pulls on the bolts until they eventually snap off.

The fix is machining the stock manifolds, aftermarket headers, or new stock manifolds and new bolts and waiting for the manifolds to warp and the bolts to break again.

New bolts are not the entire fix.

You need to find a gasket that allows the surfaces to expand and contract. Maybe use multiple gaskets, quick thought is copper.

Some guys have been going with Remflex as the latest and greatest gasket material.

Don' remember who, maybe they'll weigh in .
