I have a 2001 Dodge ram 1500 4x4. Rough idle almost dying really low idle etc all pointing towards an aic. I replaced it and went one month and same things came up again. This time I replaced it and same thing so then I went and got another one and still the same thing. I can if I start stop starting stop the engine finally find a happy place that the valve must reset itself. What is causing these valves to go bad or not operate properly. Carb seems pretty clean. Thank you John

Make sure the port that the IAC sits in is 100% clean and make sure you are using a factory mopar replacement. If there is any dirt inside the port the IAC will not be able to open and close 100% and will cause issues. Also make sure the throttle blade is not sticking partially open

Like @crazykid1994 said, you have to make sure the ports are spotless and the throttle body are spotless first, then move on to testing the IAC valve itself, verifying it moves full range of motion and there's not a wiring problem. You could also have another vacuum leak somewhere inducing too much air into the system.

If the ports and TB are clean, the wiring is intact and no vacuum leaks, maybe it's the part itself. Aftermarket parts are horrible across the board today. You never know what you are going to get. Often you don't have a choice as OEM is NLA.

Thank you for your advice. I'm going to go out there and clean it super good! I replaced the one that went bad and everything was fine for a month. Then it went bad again just recently and I replaced it and immediately the same issues were going on went back inside got another one non OEM and for some reason I'm not having any problems but the code came up as p0505 again. I'm going to go clean it and I would like to get back to you thank you so much any other thoughts before I go nuts

I'm going to go clean it out and everything right now. The code comes up this morning as p0505 again. That's the IAC code obviously so I'm going to go clean it like you guys said and put it back in there. I'm just afraid to touch it cuz it's running perfect but I know the code is there so I'm going to have a problem soon. I learned to reset by shutting the truck on and off watching my RPM gauge knowing that it reset itself and I could go all day and not a problem without shutting the truck off. I've had eight restarts today running around and no problems what would you do. I think I'm just going to clean it. Any other suggestions I also shared with crazy kid

Any suggestions on cleaning this out including the obvious? I was just thinking spraying carb truck cleaner in there the best that I can and maybe a couple q-tips

I used q-tips and pipe cleaner and used an awl to try to scrape some of the hardened grime out of the little nooks and crannies.

Are the throttle blades clean and the throttle body itself?
I prefer to use a scanner and set my throttle plate opening to where there are only a couple counts on the IAC motor.

There is actually a tool and procedure to set the throttle body blades.

The other thing is are you using a MOPAR factory OEM and fairly new PCV valve? Many aftermarkets don't flow correctly.

I ordered an oem today. I know now though after going through three of these one final one to test to make sure it's not the part. That's clear now that the code po505 is showing it short. I have to track the short down but I'm still going to put the OEM on any suggestions on the short I'd like to just probe into each one of the electrical feed and I'm trying to figure out how I believe a continuity meter?

I'm going to check the wires that come to the valve itself considering the code says p0505 with explanation saying shorted. I must have a short and one of the four wires. What can I use to test for short then I guess I can track that Old wire down back to the computer. Or test continuity between the computer and the valve itself

Here is the wiring from my 2001 dakota manual - not sure how much if any the Ram wiring is different.
