Can gear oil be used for its rust inhibitors for other projects like preserving metals ? Or cleaning ?

Yep, several around these parts put there used engine oil on there wooden trailer decks.People use used engine oil to preserve wood, but Gear oil is another animal that may be bad I guess

I use a mix of old engine oil and diesel on my hay wagon and 25' Gooseneck deck boards. The drippings work well as an undercarriage rust inhibitor at the same time. I just roll it on thick in the summer and it gets absorbed well.

Do you have hemi tic that was helped by lubeguard or you just running it for the extra protection? I generally dont see the benefit of mixing biotech with redline, now your mixing makes it less on an issue since you have most of the sump PUP. You are mixing two ester products and in theory that can "potentially" throw off the balance of the oil. Unless this helps a certain situation you are having, I would not be heading this direction.
Lubeguard is 100% safe when used with shelf oils, redline is 100% when ran by itself, lubeguard plus redline is an unknown. Small risk does not mean no risk. There is a lot of paper in this thread on benefits and risks of esters.

No just want prevention. That was the PUP Lubegard route. I just happened upon the Redline deal. I wasn't going to mix the Redline/Lubegard, but with the extra liters of RL I will have for the 2nd change I was wondering if adding them to the PUP would have enough benefit that maybe adding some Lubegard???
I will just do a RL/PUP the 2nd change out then..??

I have said it like 100 times or more, if my opinion has value, dont mix biotech and redline end of story. The only exception is if redline didnt kill some hemi lifter tick, then potential benefits out weight the risks. I dont really have anything else to say on it. Yes mixing redline and pup is 100% safe or redline with any shelf oil. Perhaps even a good idea, using 5w30 redline x a quart versus biotech 15 ounce. I can make an argument that the redline used in this manner would out perform the biotech when you consider viscosity and other aspects of both products.
It seams on this issue has it happens a good bit is that people ignore what I am saying and just use their own strategy, which is perfectly fine. But I'm not changing my thoughts on it, esters react with seals, if that goes out of balance it is an issue. Shelf oils are nuetral, they arent gonna mess with this, biotech is an ester product along with moly. It is poor mans redline a fine strategy by itself, but their is a reason why it is called poor mans reldine and not rich mans redline, it is not as effective.

So maybe a good route while I have the RL is mix a quart with the PUP and shelf the Lubegard until all the RL is used up? Then breakout the LG for the PUP changes way down the road.

How you guys been? All is well here, my Hemi is about 91,000 tick free miles. Been running Amsoil SS 5-20 for a long time.
I think I'm going to switch to 5-30, getting up in miles and such. What do you think?

Well, at first glance it's a no? I mean nothing better then grilled cheese and mato soup, top 5 dish for me, maybe top ten, but common now you cant put that in a can? I must admit if I see it I will try it, but I am not having high hopes. I seriously doubt this tops my 2 favorite soups minestrone or chicken and dumplings. What is your favorite soup??

Well, finally bit the bullet and changed the two UTV final drive gearbox oils. Had to remove brush guards just to get at them, despite holes in them supposedly for service access. Holes aren't big enough or aligned right.
What a PITA for just 20 ounces of gear lube change. 3 hours worth.
I suppose Red Line MT-85 manual gear oil is made in such small batches compared to ATF it costs more.
I confirmed in my Owner Manual it states only GL-4 SAE 89W
No mention of GL-5 EP gear oil as alternate, so I didn't know until you guys chimed in. Oh well it's done. This is a chores machine, don't ride thru watee.

Yes, you should move to 5w30 for the rest of your trucks days. Especially amsoil SS which is a very low viscosity for a 30 weight, it is even thinner then their 0w30, at 10.3 it has a thin starting 30 weight visc. Hemi 395 uses their 0w40 SS which has been proven against hemi tic a real option now. However, that is very thick and as long as you are tick free, stay put with 5w30 and pair that will their ea filter, you are using their larger filter as well??
