"Hemi 395 uses their 0w40 SS which has been proven against hemi tic a real option now"

Any references for using Amsoil SS 0W40 in the 6.4L? After my last UOA, and heavy towing on my truck, I'm concerned with the viscosity loss with PUP & Lube Guard. I'll change my oil prior to my typical 5K OCI to mitigate this but after my stash of PUP is used up I'm looking for an alternative oil at the 85K mile mark. TIA

you thinking of another tick test, if so what oil you thinking?
Possibly, i couldn't remember if it was mentioned here or not. I've seen this mentioned a few times on 2 different Ram FB groups and how its a "miracle product" for the hemi tick...

Where is everyone buying the RP20-820 filter. 30 bucks on Amazon??? Am i just cheap?
I buy directly from them.

That price is insane!

I ran AZF in my old 6.4 when it was first introduced, and my engine sounded like a thrashing machine on it. I mean really, really bad. I'd wager there have been reformulations, as others have used it with success.

Same and nope I didn't like it in my 6.4. Its not a knock on amsoil as I still run it in everything else I own including my wife car. Amsoil 0w40 SS just didn't like my 6.4 as far as sound goes or maybe the 6.4 didn't like it. I'm sure it was protecting well but I couldn't handle the ticks and rattles the engine made while using it. Switched over to redline 5w30 and it is as quite as a 6.4 can be. Not perfect but much better. I did try the 0w30 redline and have the same results as the amsoil so back to the 5w30 I go.

Not the first time we heard this, kinda of exactly as some others. Some lesser ticks respond to viscosity, it is those ticks that seam to respond to 0w40 amsoil ss. I would say it is worth a try, but if you have a tick with a larger issue, you need EP additives and Baseoils over viscosity. Was the 0w30 redline newer or older formula?

I’m not sure if it’s new or old formula but it is what is in my truck now. I’ll have to check a bottle for the date code. I knew almost immediately it was quite a bit more noisy compared to the 5w30. I only tried the 0w30 because of winter but I can’t even say we had cold weather here this year so it wasn’t worth it.

The reason I ask is because new formula is built different, old formula had quieting effects of 5w30. I would bet a gold nickle you have new formula. Which is bad news and also what most of us thought would happen with new formula 0w30 redline. Sadly redline took away a real weapon we had to battle this tick issue. Thanks for the report....

It is a real conundrum for guys in cold places where 5w30 redline has cold piston slap. What to use there? 5w30 redline but keep a sump warmer on it?

Mine hides in a heated garage on cold winter nights but the couple of times it sat outside in the cold I did not notice any cold piston slap with the Redline 5W30 in mine.

Yeah I agree. Why mess with something that works but I guess the small amount of hemi’s that use it aren’t important enough to keep the same formula. At least the 5w30 seems to be doing well.

Perhaps HPL 0W30 SC oil in this instance as a consideration?

We had some colder overnights here in Ontario and when I was in QC for some work specifically during some dead cold nights in minus double digit temps, the cold starts were absolute magic with zero cold piston slap on start up with HPL SC 0W30 oil.

I'm a super fan of RL HP 5W30 in the warmer months and HPL SC 0W30 in the colder months.

Always using the RP 20-820 oil filter though ;)

I have been using this SS oil for a few years now after initially using PUP. I have not done a UOA yet and change it at around 4,500-5,000 miles. Currently at around 58,000 miles and the engine is quiet. I don't tow much weight, but carry a heavy camper 99% of the time.

Thx everyone for the replies. Between my truck camper which frequently has the boat behind it, plus towing heavy loads both bumper pull & gooseneck, I might just stick with what has worked for me so far. PUP with Lube Guard for the past 15K miles. PUP since day 1 except for a couple of changes at the FCA Engineering Center which was PP. I've never had the tic and only a couple of times can remember a noisy start up. I was thinking of going to a high mileage oil but no PUP there. I do run Castrol Edge 5W30 HM in another car with almost 150K miles. I ran Castrol Edge 0W40 Euro with good result when I had my Porsche Cayenne S. No wonder there are so many oil threads Lol. I have 2 more PUP & Lube Guard changes with the RP 20-500 filter in my stash. Again. thx for the feedback!

This is where I'm headed.

I'm considering HPL 0W-30 all year due to the high HTHS and low NOACK. We know they're using low shear star VII polymer in it (they told us).

According to BITOG, none of their oils shear down, even the cheapest PCMO which doesn't use the star polymer doesn't shear. I'm running it right now and in a few months I'll have a UOA available to verify that.

It's a pity that HPL doesn't get more traction here, far as I know there are only 2 or 3 of us running it right now. It's an amazing oil manufactured by an American company who cares about the product and its customers.
