In about april of 2017 I exited off the freeway onto a secondary, proceeded at 35 mph to a fourway stop. In the middle of the left turn my passenger side front wheel flange separated from the bearing. I was able to skid into a space on the side of the road from where the truck was flatbedded to my garage where I replaced the unit wheel bearing. The wheel flange had broke free of the bearing. The bearing did not fail. It was obvious by the corrosion in the break it had been developing for a while. At that time I thought it strange but merely bought another and kept driving. Until March 16 this year. Same situation, I had been driving the freeway, exited onto a secondary road, made a left turn onto a residential, proceeded to the address and was making a right turn into the drive when the drivers side wheel flange separated from the bearing. Two factory unit wheel bearings on opposite sides failed in the same manner. Consider this happening at speed instead of slow maneuvers.
Dodge uses the same unit wheel bearing for 2wd as 4wd. The difference is on my 2wd truck the cv axle shaft is not there. I am not an engineer, just an active car guy that likes to figure things out. At the least the axle shaft would keep the wheel flange from separating even if there is a break. At the most tha axle shaft would lend support to the assembly.
So, anyone out there have similar experience? I filed a report to the National Traffic Highway Safety Administration. By the way Chevy uses a unit wheel bearing very much the same, however there 2wd part is solid where the axle shaft would be and of course carries a different part number.
