Have 2017 5.7 and went to dealership today for oil change, wanted to switch to synthetic oil now at 12,000 miles. They said that use 0W-20 Mobil synthetic for all synthetic oil changes. Anyone have any experience with the 0W-20 versus 5W-20! Is the 0W-20 a normal use, good all year round oil to run

Where do you live? 0W oils are better for colder climates. Because they are supposed to be thinner at start up.

I would go with a 30 weight oil versus 20 though. Your cam lobes, and mds lifters will thank you

Live in upper Michigan! K just wondering if I can keep using when summer gets here, I do tow boats often. Wonder why they are using it all the time.

Check the actual viscosity specs of your chosen oil, most people will be surprised.

I run 0w20 syn PuP in my pentastar. Some of the best oil on the planet, and will provide cold flow better, and better protection at temp.

Better than that, do a UOA...I think you'll be surprised!

OP, go to a top-tier 30 weight synthetic and a synthetic filter...all will be well! Don't believe me? Skim the Synthetic Oil thread; I basically summed it in the first sentence of this paragraph!

Bassin: Only Opinions posted no significant white paper data/proof which provides the highest quality protection.

If you chose to run the 20Wt - run either 0W or 5W = basically just Winter ratings.
0W-20 has shown to have a strong base oil and formulation.

Towing every so often? I would defiantly look @ the 5W-30 viscosity!

Do a month or so of research and try to scrape up any advertisement from any oil brands that claim or show data that running a 20Wt oil creates LESS ENGINE Wear when compared to the 30Wt or 40Wt viscosity.
There have even been a few models of autos, in which after a short time of either engine issues or engine failures the Manufactures had no choice and made the switch from the 20Wt to a thicker viscosity and to this day have cured or remedied any further issues.

20Wt as well as Low Viscosity ATF is ALL about MPG increases - NOT Less Engine Wear or Transmission Wear!

In a Simple Daily Driver: There is nothing wrong with the 20Wt viscosity!
M1 0W-20 has put up some very impressive UOAs within BITOG!

Just my Opinion of Course!
Good Luck in Your Quest

I think Lee meant 0w30 and not 5w30, and btw m1 0 weights are some of the best 0 weights you can get, especially in 30 weight and twenty weight as well. I find it very funny the dealer is using m1, that is a nono, if they can use something against the owners manual so can you. Keep that reciept. But, if you want the cold protection I say run 0 weight, but yeah 0w30 m1 is one of the best oils out there and really safe to run all year. Yes, likely 0w20 will be ok too, but I don't subscribe to running twenty weight because of what we have seen in the Cams. Especiilay if you whale on throttle once in a while or tow at all, then no 0w20 would be no good, but if you are just commuting with the truck, it wouldn't be that much different then 5w20, do a uoa as suggested, look for how much the oil sheared away from the 9 cSt. If it ends up 7 or below, I'd say I wouldn't do that again. One reason why ram has people on 5w20 is because of how stable that oil is, 99% of the time it wont shear down a full point. With 0w20 you have a little more risk of shear, I'm not sure either way, it would depend on the engine. If you are just doing it one time, don't worry, but if you are considering this as a strategy, do a uoa, or better yet, run 0w30 m1.

I'd pick a new dealer, fast.

You are still under warranty. Use what the manual says. Mobil 1 does not meet Chrysler's spec. Mobil Super does.

If you want something OTC, meets Chrysler's spec, and has a good dose of moly, try the new Shell Rotella Gas Truck 5w20.

I wouldn't go using mobil super in a cold area, it is conventional. M1 really does well in every cold flow test.. Not disagreeing with the fella above, doesn't have to be m1, PUP 0 weights will flow well and meet spec. Look at mobil super 3000 and see if that meets spec, it is synthetic.

I’ll probably switch it out on next change to 5w-20. Just surprised that when I questioned them at the dealership that they said that’s what they put in all when running synthetic

0w30 is like a unicorn around here, which annoys me as it would be my preference.
