Hi guys,

I need some opinions to either talk me into, or out of, buying a 2nd gen 2500 V10.

I'll start by saying that I had a 5.2 1500 4x4, a Hemi powered 4x2, and a 5.9 Durango RT in the past, and I'm looking to get back into a Dodge and ditch my Suburban.

Here's my issue... I really want a 2500 V10, but I don't know if it's a wise decision. I'll be using the truck as a daily driver, occasional off road toy, occasionally do some towing (maybe 4 times a year as of now, could be more down the road, through the mountains of Utah, Arizona, and Colorado), and carry dogs around (I'm a dog trainer).

I like the idea of having more truck than I need, but at the same time I'm still wondering if a 1500 is still more than I need.

What benefits do I get from a 2500 V10 vs a 1500 5.9 besides the obvious torque? Downfalls? I need some coaxing here. It seems like around my area (SLC, Utah) the prices of both seem to be equal enough to be a wash. So help me out guys!!

P.S. Don't mind the year and engine size in my info. Registration required it.

Id go with the 2500. Theyre a much stronger drive train! The Dana 60's can handle a lot more abuse and parts last a lot longer then the 1500 axles. Much better steering and braking as well.. You could get a 2500 5.9 as well, doesnt have to be a v10. Of course with the v10 you get a stronger transmission then the 5.9.

I've got a 5.9 2500 v8, absolutely love it. Not mad gas mileage either (of course that would change with the v10). Look for one with 4.10 gears if you can, I'm hoping to go from 3.55 to 4.56 after that tax income gets here :D

x3....2500 all the way. More truck than you need in the mountains especially is a nice feeling...If you could find a v10 that's great...Look for 5.9 diesels too though...Tons of parts out for those and they last forever...

Thanks guys. I have always worked no my own vehicles, but only on gas, which is what makes me lean towards the V-10 over the Cummins. I'm just not experienced with one enough to pull the trigger. And with gas prices the way they are (at least right now) the difference in fuel costs over the year is negligible for me.

At the moment I'm in the process of opening a dog training facility, and once it gets up to speed I'll be towing a travel trailer, dogs, and equipment to competitions. So I'm looking at about 6,000 pounds at a minimum, and it goes up from there.

I'm 99% sure I want a 2500. I just needed a little reassurance. I don't want the 5.9 Magnum either, because even though I have no issues with the motor I really don't want to deal with the transmission like I had to with my Durango.

Hopefully I'll be the new owner of another 2nd gen 2500 in the next few days. If not, I'll be keeping my eye out. Anyone want to trade for a Suburban =)

I love my 1500 w/ 318 and the 5spd. But I'd say 2500 and learn about the Cummins.

Cummins 5.9 diesel
Now that I tow a 29 ft travel trailer, I would have to say 2500 Cummins. I can't ever go back to anything smaller now. I just happen to get mine about six months before I bought the travel trailer. I was travelling part of I-10 twice a week and wanted the diesel for that. I also tow a trailer for my bikes. I love mine :)

I said earlier the 2500. I changed my mind. Get a F250 or a Chevy 2500 Duramax diesel with the Allison transmission. I am going to trade mine for a F250 tomorrow. Even with only 164K miles it is becoming nothing but trouble. Don't get me wrong I love my truck but I have spent over $3500 in repairs over the last six months and on a routine maint, the shop could not get it primed. This IS the last straw and I am very angry right now at those people. It also had the transmission replaced a few months before I bought it from the original owner. I had yo get a shot of whiskey and a xanax and I am still losing sleep over this thing. It is time for it to go!!! I think the shop has messed up both my transfer pump ans sucked air into it. Now, we all know that these pumps are prone to failure but if you touch it at the bottom, it will suck air into the fuel line. The pumps they are replacing are being attached to the fuel tank and the conversion is going to be about $2000 unless I can find an original pump for it. I am a chick and I know this!!! (not a *******). We are going to look at the F250 tomorrow. My ex fiance is going to call the shop tomorrow because I am too dang tired and mad to deal with them right now and he also has the Cummins. I think they need to fix this before they broke it and at no charge. It was running fine when I brought it in and there had been no evidence that this pump was going out. I pull a 29 ft RV with this and I need something reliable.

Sounds like youre paying a bunch of idiots who have no idea what theyre doing to work on your truck.... thats not really the trucks fault. You should tell them since they screwed your truck up they need to fix it free of charge or Im sure you could get the law involved with them.

If youre looking at Fords dont bother with a 6L or you'll see what a real headache of a motor is. I would never buy a chev 2500 or 3500, or a Duramax. IFS should never be under a 2500/3500 and Duramaxs simply dont have the life spans Ford or Cummins diesels do. At least from what Ive seen!

Find a 12 valve Cummins, thats up to 1998.5, best diesel engine on the planet. Or a 7.3l Powerstroke, the 6.0l is a load unless you sink a good 7k+ into it (although I'm sure there are plenty that were ok from the factory, still not a reputable engine). Do yourself a favor and dont even consider a Duramax. If you want to go GM, the older Detroit Diesels are badass when paired with a 5spd manual, just my experience though. John is right, IFS doesnt belong on a medium duty pickup.

I never understood why anyone thought that was a good idea... I love seeing guys with IFS doing the Chevy dance when they try to truck pull:roflsquared:

Why? Because people want their truck to ride like a car. Same reason they put coil springs in the back of new trucks and the old GM trucks. It all about comfort and convenience these days.

Better think twice about buying a Ford superduy. We hardy see any cummins in the shop but powerstrokes are part of my daily life, junk imo. I wouldn't even recommend a ford superduty to my worst enemy.
