Wow, a lot of misinformation here about what a thermostat does.

First and foremost, a thermostat is going to be underutilized without a tune. The purpose of lowering your coolant temperature is to reduce your cylinder temperatures and reduce detonation caused by that. Basically lower coolant temps means you can run more timing safely, which means more power.

There' no misinformation posted. But most people are not going to adjust timing on a stock truck. So what's the point.

And I ran a 180 Tstat with no tune and still kept the temps low, just not as low with fans adjusted.

You won't gain any power and you might lose a mpg.

Do it. It's a must especially in hotter climates.

Uh, really?

There's no point to doing a lower temp thermostat besides adding timing.

And 99% people don't add timming. So it's a very weak argument. Considering it's not really worth it on a stock truck.

and quote me all you want but you won't gain any hp UNLESS you had timing like you say.

But from what I understand when the engine is hotter it will produce less power because the stock computer will retard the timing to reduce detonation no?

That's IAT (intake air temp) not coolant temp. The PCM doesn't adjust anything parameters based of cooling temp.

You're completely missing what I'm saying.

I agree with you. Not much advantage on a stock truck. Which is why you're an idiot if you do this without a tune. You're wasting your money.

I've done this in the past and after doing many hours of reading on BITOG website, I have come to find out timing aside, this "mod" does nothing. Those guys recommend not doing it to ensure oil temps get above 212 to boil off any moisture in your oil

Water will evaporate before 212

I have a 180 T-Stat and I can definitely tell the difference in the mpg. I may be wrong here and I am positive there will be a line out the door to tell me if I am but it seems like once I installed the lower temp t-stat, not only did my mpg go down, there seems to be a sluggishness once the engine warms up to its highest temp and really only noticeable on very hot days. When its cool out, even when the engine is all the way warmed up, she's quick as hell. May have something to do with the semi not liking the hot temps versus anything to do with the t-stat. Did not really notice any difference in knock on my trinity. If anything, it went up with the added fuel. Just my .02 so don't crucify me.

Idk what year yours is, my my OEM coolant is pink.

09, if you can read my sig.

I think 09-12s is the orange ZEREX G-05

13+ I think start off pink, then go the to purple now.. I dunno. Pretty confusing.
