Hi, I have a 2004 Hemi Ram 1500 with 70000 miles. I took a road trip from Jacksonville FL to southern Indiana and back a few weeks ago(appox. 1700 miles). 2 days after returning, I noticed a loud hum in the front end. It starts about 20 MPH and progressively gets louder. Also, if its making the noise and i turn the steering wheel to the right its gets quieter, or depending on how fast I'm going, completely stops. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Is it a 4x4? Any squeaking at low speed? (under 5 MPH)

Probably a front wheel bearing, or a missing shock mount bushing, but I would check my wheel bearing first. Throw it up on a jack grab the top and bottom of the tire and try to wiggle it. If you got wiggle you got problems.

How hard is a wheel bearing to replace? Is it expensive? I'm no mechanic, but I can do most things on my own, short of rebuilding an engine.

Since you are 2WD it is pretty simple. I am sure there is a thread here on how to do so.
Remove tire, remove brakes, remove bearing, repeat backwards.

Same problem with a 2005 4x4

I have the same noise coming from my 2005 4x4. At Highway speeds, The noise is almost as loud as the Borla exhaust on my Daytona. If I am steering left the noise fades but if I steer right is is loud. I jacked up the front and notice that if I rock the passenger side wheel back and forth there is a knock (click). Is it the CV joint? I have not yet taken off the wheel or the caliper. or put the ruck into 4WD. Should I remove them to get a better idea? I hate to start the job and find out I needed to order bearings but I also don't have enough money to just goes out and buy all the front end parts.
Any help is appreciated.

Had exactly the same thing in my 04 4x4. Sounded like I was running on tires thats were 1/4 inflated. When I turned to the right it disappeared and as soon as I straightened out it came back. Took into the shop today and it was my Drivers side hub/bearing. Had it replaced ($620.00 CDN later) and its like driving a new truck its so quite. The tech quoted 1.2 hours to install which I thought was pretty decent but they hosed me on the price of the part at $365.00.

I had the same thing on my 03 4x4.. It was the Hub, I had it replaced then 2 months later the other side went out, then a few months after that the ball joints, so when I did the ball joints I just replaced upper and lower ball joints, tye rod ends, shocks, brakes, and rotors.. I figured while im there and its all apart anyway might as well do it all so I dont have to take it all apart again..
