Just got back from a 2 week trip (not in the truck-Flew), jumped in the truck this morning, fired up my new 2011 Ram 5.7 with 290 miles, and was horrified to hear a LOUD rythmic knocking sound, kindof like a lifter, but coming from the back lower end of the engine from what I could tell. Taking it in to the dealer tomorrow, but thought I'd try here-What in the world could be making that much racket? Sounds like metal smacking metal, but doesn't seem like it's coming from the top end. Never heard anything like it before....any suggestions? Checked oil, it's good.

Sorry I didn't get back to replying, just got busy and forgot about it! Never did take it in to the dealer-the next time I started after posting this, it just quit-not tappered off, not got quieter, just stopped. From where the noise was, a friend and I figured it was probably something in the exhaust? His theory was an exhaust leak, that seated as it got hot. No idea, but it's been fine for the last 600 miles, never happened again. Go figure. Probably should have taken it in, but with it not doing it anymore, and no codes in the computer, I doubt they'd have looked terribly hard anyway.

The worst kind of issue when it may or may not be there when you get to the dealer.

I got the 4.7 in my 2011 and I have a noise too, left bank of engine, to me sounds like an exhaust leak of sorts, but the dealer tells me this is normal.

At idle speed I can here it over my FM Series 40, so as far as I am concerned it isn't normal. Can really hear it when pulling in the garage too.

Yep if they can't duplicate it, you are basically wasting your time.....

Not sure if you figured it out yet, but my truck had a tick right after I bought it, it was a broken bolt on the exhaust manifold, replaced all bolts/studs, and gasket, problem solved.
