2017 Ram 1500 Special Services Edition 5.7 135K miles. I recently had the cam and lifters replaced, but the engine is still making a pretty loud noise. It's not a lifter, I've heard many of those in the past. To me it sounds like piston slap, maybe. Its only on the driver's side, down lower on the side. Can hear it pretty good through the fenderwell. I don't know why they didn't pull a main cap or 2 and have a look at the bearings while they were in there.

The only thing I'm hearing is similar to what mine sounds like that I have pretty much chalked up to noisy injectors at this point. If the audio is getting flattened out and it's more distinct than that then maybe check your manifold bolts, I was able to find my broken bolt by just moving my hand around the perimeter of the manifold until I felt exhaust gases pushing out. Didn't really sound like that but maybe.

The worst thing by far is the cam and if you just did that then I wouldn't worry too much.

Wouldnt they have taken care of any manifold-related things when the heads went to the machince shop to be cleaned, checked, and milled (supposedly)..?

Yes, they certainly should have and almost certainly did check/correct any exhaust manifold issues.

Is this noise the same as you had before??? Kinda sounds like rocker-related, bent push rod or lifter to me.

Most piston slap comes on gradually as engine wears. Usually it would 'slap' when cold, then go away. But as engine wears, it might become continuous. Piston slap is a heavier noise than cam-related noise.

This noise is a deeper, heavier knocking sound. Its nothing like a lifter or any valve train type of thing. It doesn't sound like an exhaust leak either, and the manifold to pipe bolts are new.

Buy yourself one of these ,and use it on the oilpan, and see if the noise you're hearing is coming from that area.

That sounds like a rod knock when there is excessive clearance.

What is your cold oil pressure at idle?

Do you hear the noise in a cold start?

What is your hot oil pressure at idle?

Oil pressure is 49 hot, I'll look again at cold oil pressure. The noise really bad at cold start, never really goes away. I wish I could load the video directly.

Send me the vid, email is: davefra AT hotmail.com. I'll extract the audio, host that mp3 file on my server space, and then send you a link that you can post.

If you have Audacity, (it's free, no spam) you can extract the audio yourself.

A little rev and then release would serve to better ID it. Sounds like a lifter / rocker arm knock/tap. If a rod, the knock would probably sound like a double knock.
