2012 3500 6.7. with 77k miles, pulling my enclosed 24ft trailer and car home from Carlisle a couple of weeks ago, coming into a down grade with a steep turn. I let off the gas and when I got back on the gas at 40 mph there was no power and black smoke was pouring out the back. Let off the gas then back on and she was fine; had my power back and it's done it a few times after that all around the same mph. This is a EGR DPF delete truck with a towing program only nothing radical. Going to take it to a buddy's shop and have him plug his computer in and get the code. Just wondering if anyone has had the same issue. The truck has been running fine for over10 years with the EGR DPF delete and this towing program until a couple of weeks ago.

Yeah...need the code to really determine what's going on here. Lots of soot can be caused by a multitude of things but mainly black smoke means there's too much fuel moving through the system.

That happened to my 11. Turned out the cheap eBay map sensor went **** up. Bought an OEM from Geno’s Garage and all was right in the world.

Got the P codes all 3 of them lol P040D P2262 P226C. The odd things is the truck runs perfect then once in a great while it will lose power and smoke heavily for only a few seconds, let off the gas then back on it and she's fine. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You have the trifecta of what Lee Zeldin has been talking about, dpf, EGR cooler and def. The codes suggest your exhaust is gummed to bad it is effecting turbo. If you are gonna keep driving it get a cetane boost and only do long trips, hopefully you have a different vehicle for grocery getter,. look around the forum for 5 gens and EGR and look at all Dave's stuff. They ruined diesels for a no benefit to what they ruined them for, in fact it makes more co2. You should clean out EGR cooler or get upgraded one before it takes your turbo. 5k or so versus 21k, the last guy on the forum 21k just for turbo and egr related stuff.

I don't drive the truck very often and it's usually long hauls pulling my trailer. I have my EGR deleted how would that effect the EGR cooler? I have my 2017 Durango for around town and going to work.

@68 Coronet R/T two of your codes are boost related, wonder if your at the beginning issues of turbo actuator failing. It could be the vane in the turbo are getting gummed up, something people use the exhaust brake to force the vanes to move more.

That condition was typical diesel overload when grade is driving the engine like free power but engine still getting fuel and then when you hit the gas you have a rich condition. Usually the turbo adjusts to that and sends air. It really is a nothing burger except for the codes. It is possible it was just that downhill thing causing it. I'd clear codes and see if anything like this happens when not going down a steep hill. DPF can wipe a turbo, but my guess with that info and thanks for posting it as I didn't see it in original post, my unprofessional guess is that it was just the hill. I drove old diesels and new diesels, you can bank on an old diesels dropping black smoke during steep grades when throttle was pressed. Not as much with newer rigs, but that alone wouldn't make me worry. If codes come back when normal operation then I'd have someone look at turbo.

The first thing I do when I start the truck up is turn on the exhaust brake, I always run it turn on

It is the combo trailer and grade that would be the theoretical cause, when that weight is going down the grade is driving. I don't think a grade can drive a 3500 at all, so since you have weight behind you that is what makes sense. So everytime it happened you had weight behind you?

Always from low or idle rpm to pressing gas pedal?

Was hoping for options then the obvious, it ain't getting enough air so perhaps it is the turbo.

It seems to always happen between 40 and 50 mph when I let off the gas. I can tell when it happens as when I step on the gas there's no power and black exhaust starts pouring out so I let off the gas and let it slow down on it's own and when it gets below 40 mph I can step on it again and it's fine. I'm going to order an actuator from BD Diesel Performance Monday afternoon.
