So I’ve had my Ram for a few months and no oil light has come on. I past 3000 miles nothing I just hit 5000 miles and no light from prior oil change. Is there an oil light that comes on with this year? What is the recommended miles for changing oil?

I have a 2011 Ram 1500 and it won't come on until the recommended interval, which is 7500 miles between changes. The message appears on the information screen in the dash. You will need to Google how to reset the notification cause it is funky.

Its not that funky. Just turn ignition on. Foot all the way on gas pedal 3 times, and it goes away.

What is the recommended miles for changing oil?

Depends on the oil and how the engine is running. If you ever want to find out for sure be loyal to one brand of oil and get uoa to verify, let the lab set the interval. General rule would be 7500 miles for easy driving and synthetic oil, less for conventional or blends. Another important factor is filter, see my filter thread, spun microglass with outlast anything out there, it will last longer then any oil, but paper filters are only good for about 3 mos or 3k miles, then they stiffen.

Does the computer in the Truck determine when the oil needs to be change or does the light come on every 7500 miles?

That’s what I was expecting the light on every 3k. I’m wondering why it’s been 5k miles and no light. My engine is super clean only 12,000 miles on it.

The light is an algorithm, it doesn't know anything about the quality of the oil or oil used. Basically has value for people who can't take care of their stuff. I personally wouldnt pay it no nevermind, I use trip B to tell me miles between changes.

How bout just look at the windshield sticker, and change it every 5000 for regular/blend, or every 7500 for synthetic .... Message pops up, just reset it ...

No mater how i drive or outside air temp . .it triggers at 10k.

I am not truly believing this algorithm.

Oil Life Monitors.

While first-generation oil life monitors were simple, mileage-based systems that prescribed fixed oil-change intervals regardless of operating conditions, today’s systems are far more sophisticated. They monitor several conditions known to reduce oil life, enter those values into an algorithm and return the oil-life percentage you see on your vehicle’s display.

Today, it’s common for an OLM in a vehicle driven mostly under normal service to recommend an oil change after 10,000 miles (16,000 km) or more. They’ve prevented the waste of countless quarts of perfectly good oil over the years.

What does an oil life monitor track?
Honestly, oil-life monitor is a poor description for these systems. A better name is oil life estimator. They do not monitor any direct physical or chemical property of oil; they only accumulate data from the vehicle’s computer and predict how your driving habits and operating conditions have affected the oil’s viscosity, total base number (a measure of remaining detergency), oxidation level and other factors.

Since the OLM can’t measure these key properties like a chemist in a lab would measure them, how can it know when the oil has, for example, only 10 percent life remaining? It can’t – it simply estimates oil life based on an algorithm.

Driving conditions affect oil life percentage
Oil life monitors track climate, driving habits and other conditions. The algorithm calculates mileage, idle time, engine temperatures, trip times, engine loads, and ignition starts and stops. It then establishes an oil change interval as low as 3,000 miles (4,800 km) and all the way up to 10,000 miles (16,000 km) and more depending on severity of conditions.

Typically, an OLM establishes oil-change intervals in the 5,000-7,000 mile (8,000-11,000 km) range.

Here is a real-world example: Say you start your car 20 minutes before you leave the house because it’s -30˚F (-34ºC) outside and you like to get in a warm car.

Then you drive about 15 minutes to work. These conditions will lead to a shorter oil change interval since increased idle time, cold temperatures and frequent short trips shorten oil life more than “normal” operating conditions.

Find out: Should I Warm Up My Car in Winter?

Oil life monitors are advanced compared to the universal 3,000-mile oil change from years ago. However, there are some gaps in the technology.

Here are a few things oil life monitors don’t track
  • Oil Level – Oil life monitors don’t keep track of the amount of oil in your engine. However, if you completely run out of oil, hopefully your oil pressure light will illuminate before your engine fails. It’s good practice to check oil at least every month to help avoid such a scenario.
  • Oil Quality – Oil life monitors have no ability to measure oil quality. They can’t distinguish between, for example, AMSOIL Signature Series Synthetic Motor Oil and vegetable oil (do not try that at home). That’s why your oil life monitor may trigger even though the oil in your engine still has thousands of miles to go before requiring a change. In such cases, you can safely use the oil for the full drain interval recommended on the label.
  • Oil Condition– Like I said, as sophisticated as your OLM is, it can’t tell you, for example, that there are 1,000 ppm of wear metal in your oil. Only oil analysis can do that. If you have not tried it, I highly recommend it. Oil analysis can give insight into many different aspects of your vehicle.
How to reset your oil life monitor
This is the biggest question surrounding oil life monitors. They’re all a little different.

Some older vehicles require turning the key and pumping the accelerator a few times while the chime is sounding. Newer vehicles often require navigating to the proper screen on the display and following the prompts.

Consult your owner’s manual or YouTube for directions. I have found that searching the year, make, model and “oil monitor reset” yields great instructions.

Why are oil life monitors necessary?
Despite their shortcomings, oil life monitors offer a better alternative to wasting perfectly good motor oil.

Your OLM also acts as a safeguard against driving too long without an oil change in severe service. Many motorists may not realize they subject their vehicles to extended idle times or frequent short trips, which can expose the engine to wear if you don’t keep on top of oil changes.

How the Ram Oil Change Indicator works and what to expect
The Ram Oil Change Indicator system is not a simple oil quality sensor, but a software-based, algorithm-driven device that takes into account various operating conditions of the engine - the engine size, engine revolutions, and even ethanol levels in the fuel - to determine when the oil needs changing. That said, the computer does not strictly track mileage or the condition of the oil, but also tracks certain driving habits that can affect the life of the oil, as well as driving conditions such as temperature and driving terrain. Lighter, more moderate driving conditions and temperatures will require less frequent oil changes and maintenance, while more severe driving conditions will require more frequent oil changes and maintenance. Read the table below to see how the Oil Change Indicator system determines oil life.

Thank God for $1000 OLM’s ... I was afraid that $0.10 clear plastic sticker might fall off my windshield, and blow out the window ... Then I’d be totally screwed ... How bout putting that $1000 into an exhaust manifold casting material that won’t warp ... Something useful, and beneficial ... I know ... Weird thought

Personally, I wouldn't pay the monitor a lick of attention. I believe I've been using the easiest method of oil change reminders there is: every 5k miles. I just had my 2020 5.7L RAM in for it's first oil change: at 2.3k miles. I'll change it again at 5k, & every 5k after that. It's easy to remember: 5k, 10k, 15k, 20k...etc. If I ever go over: let's say I go to 16k instead of changing at 15k, I'm still well within the maintenance schedule. The next change would be at 20k, & I'm back on schedule. If I ever change early - let's say I change at 9k instead of 10k - my next change at 15k change is still well within the maintenance schedule.

I always change the oil in a new-to-me vehicle quickly: used vehicles get it almost immediately, brand new vehicles at about 2.5k miles. Next change is on the next 5k interval on the odometer. I've been using this schedule, with pure synthetic oil, since I bought my then new '96 Subaru Impreza. Since then, 15 other vehicles (including motorcycles) have passed through my wife & I. Some vehicles had mileage as high as 260k. I've never had an internal engine problem with any of them; none have used oil between changes. Maybe I could stretch the interval, but this is an easy way for my limited mind to keep track of oil changes for (currently) the 5 vehicles we own.

As mentioned, that monitor is not analyzing your oil: it's monitoring your driving habits & the mileage on the vehicle without regard to the oil quality.

To be fair, it doesn't cost Ram a single penny to put the current OLM into a truck. They developed the software once (and is probably used throughout more FCA vehicles) and just drop it into the computer in your truck. It costs nothing to install and run the software. There are no sensors or physical hardware present to get this monitor working, which wouldn't be part of the truck otherwise.

depend on how much I tow and my test i can get 18-20,000 on a oil change. If I did mine at 5,000 or 7,500 I would be wasting 3 gallons of oil each time. I use T6 exclusively. I can see how everything is doing after i get results of the analysis. I'm still sitting at 40psi at idle and 56 at or above 1,000 rpm. I have a airdog fuel system after deleting original system, that gets changed every 10,000 or less if I go into a truck stop, they are notorious for water and contaminates in their fuel.

My notification is at 6000 miles on my 2011 Sport. Don't know why there is a 1500 mile difference from one year to the next, guess Mopar has their reasons. One thing for sure, use a 5-W30 instead of 5-W20.
