I noticed that pretty much every single person posted this question over the past 5 years, but not a single one ever come back to post the resolution. So, none of these guys ever got it fixed? Not a single one?

I sure have not... but I'm thinking there are only two other parts (one -the PCM, around $1,000; the other - engine wiring harness, around $600). Think I'll also start asking for all the parts removed from now on, so if the problem doesn't go away, I can sell them...

Well, here is the status update. After the "extensive two days of deep diagnostics" and a P1007 code reset, and then suggesting a change the PCM, the engine light popped back on. So remember the old saying "Don't assume - it makes an a55 out of U and me"? Well I did assume that the engine light was the P1007 back to haunt me. That was a couple of weeks ago and I've just been driving with the light on while I try to justify investing in the PCM (which I did).

Meanwhile, winter arrived in the northeast, and we went from 50's during the day to 20's and 30's during the day. Making my 3 hour weekly journey, it seemed hard to keep the cab warm, even with full heat. Then I noticed both the coolant temperature and engine oil temperature seemed to be running lower than normal. So before I went to have the PCM installed (I can still return it) I looked to see what codes were responsible for the engine light... Low and behold, no P1007 codes at all... is was a P0128. The P0128 is alerting that the coolant temperature is not at the expected value if the thermostat is working properly.

Anyway, I reset the P0128, and use the automatic transmission top gear over-ride to keep the MDS off and adjust engine RPMs vs speed / load to keep at least keep the coolant temperature in a respectable range.

Short answer, so far, it kind-of (and I say this with a lot of reservations) looks like the wire and plug replacement to the SRV actuator ***MAY*** have solved the P1007 code. I'll be sure to follow up in a month or so with any updates.

Further follow-up... its been about 10 weeks since the P1004 last showed its ugly face. I did have other codes, P0128, and started getting al red lightening bolt, along with engine surging, particularly at idle. The P0128 was solved with a thermostat replacement (which I did in the driveway). After researching the red lightning bolt and surging, I looked over the bolts for the intake manifold replace a while back. found a bunch of loos bolts on the intake manifold, so I took it upon myself to properly torque them in the specified pattern. Not one was close to the 108 in/lbs recommended.

Currently, no more P1004 codes, no more P0128 codes, no more surging at idle, and no more red lightening bolts. I'm sure the dealer had nothing to do with the thermostat failure, but the intake bolts not only not being properly torqued, but some being blatantly loose is a poor state of affairs. I'm thinking for most things that I can do a better and more caring job on my vehicle than the dealers trained mechanics. Sad... :(

These lead me to believe it’s a crusty connection somewhere. Could it be different on different trucks , I think so. It seem like the greenies start showing after 7 or 8 years then go from there.

Just my last (hopefully) thoughts on this. It has now been about 6 months with no more sign of the dreaded P1004 code. The last thing that was done (and in my opinion the real fix) was to replace the wiring and plug going the short runner actuator. I don't know how far down the wire harness the service guys went, but after that there have been no more issues for the last 6 1/2 months.

If anyone is confronted with this issue, that is where I would tell the service guys to be looking. Also, always ask for the old parts if you are convinced to change something. If it doesn't fix the problem, it was likely the part changed was fine and you can re-coop some money selling the removed part.

Enjoy!
