Next Friday I'm going to have the flowmaster super 40 I have in my garage put on, it's too much hassle for me in the driveway because there isn't room unless at least one of the hangers is redone

I'll just have the local exhaust guy do it

so i got the muffler on sounds good out of the exhaust but i still get some slapping or clacking or whatever noise you want to call it coming from under the truck.

i think its coming through the cheap amazon y pipe i used, it seems to have some thin metal and i can hear the slapping exhaust through it, it sounds terrible and like a huge rattle.

i have some exhaust wrap left over from my last turbo kit, so i'm going to wrap the y pipe with it and hopefully dull the sound.

i have read a little bit on the interwebs about how this heat wrap deadens noise somewhat. we'll see. it sounds like **** when i hit a certain RPM and the slapping starts. also i just generally hear the exhaust more than i was expect even from thin walled headers.

its normal to hear more exhaust noise through headers, but this is a lot more.

annoying

X pipe, dual tubing all the way back, mufflers of your choice

what you described right there was the exhaust gas pulses of each bank slapping into each other at a specific rpm band while trying to squeeze into the single pipe

I think I can get by with what I have with the thin y pipe wrapped.

I have a roll of 4" wrap coming and I'll wrap it twice or even three times whatever it takes lol

With it half ass wrapped right now only 1 later I can only hear it a little bit

I told you to wrap the headers ,as it helps to cut down on the tinny sound the exhaust pulses create in the primaries

Its not coming from the headers it's coming from the y pipe
The headers still ping, and it's noticable if they aren't wrapped. Plus all your underhood wiring and hoses will appreciate them being wrapped, including the steering knuckle. Easier to replace a set of headers every 10 years, then it is to fix heat baked wiring and hoses every 5 years

buddy has got multiple noises that he never knew existed and consequently thinks they are all the same... this is one of those life experiences where you learn something at the end :favorites13:

I've had literally a dozen different cars and trucks with long tubes and none of them did this with mufflers I can hear it coming from the cheap thin y pipe

No matter what you think, you'll still hear ping in the primaries if you're tuned into listening for it.It's basically impossible for them not to radiate the noise of the exhaust pulses.
Forum warriors ,more like guys trying to clue you in,but you seem to be a bit stubborn about listening to advice ;)

Derrr you gotta wrap headers or else

Like headers haven't been around for decades before exhaust wrap became popular

I don't care about the sound from the headers I care about the clapping, the muffler stopped it from coming out of the exhaust but I can hear the clapping sound through the cheap y pipe

That's where we are at, I'm not going to take the ******* headers off and wrap them

This y pipe never heard any clapping out of it, had it out of the exhaust at a certain rpm without a muffler

With a muffler, no clapping sound.

The y pipe makes a smooth transition than this **** thin amazon one.

Then replace or wrap the y pipe and stop whining about it.

If you have long tube headers, what’s the point of running them into a single exhaust? Do it right and put on a true dual exhaust.

Because the trucks are already setup this way and I didn't want to redo the entire thing

Actually a big 3.5" single outflows a set of 2.5" duals, and provides more scavenging, but he's using the stock 3" so he won't have any gain over a set of 2.5" dual pipes
