So my truck has just over 100k on it, I have owned since 36k. I did trans service at 68k, with factory pan and trans fluid. At about 89k I noticed a faint “clunking” sound when I get on the throttle from being off throttle. Essentially I am driving down the road, let off the throttle then when I get back on the throttle I hear the sound almost every time. Usually in higher gear. FYI, I am very light on the throttle. Now when I park in the garage (I just started using garage, wife is now an ex-wife) i here a fairly loud “clucking” sound from the trans when I first start the truck! I do park with my back left wheel on a chalk block bolted to the slab. This sound doesn’t happen everyday. I checked my u joints, no slack. No other shifting issues. So any ideas??

What transmission do you have on your vehicle?

What confuses me is the sound when it starts up? It sounds like it is from the trans but it’s in park and the converter shouldn’t be ingaged and the u joints are not moving. I am at a loss

Best bet is to try to record the sound and upload it.

If the truck is RWD check the carrier bearing that splits the 2 piece driveshaft.

Anybody have an idea on what it is?

Sorry for the late reply but this has been an issue on the 5th gen forums from what i’m seeing too.

If you’re shifting the engine into Reverse or Drive when this occurs, then yes, it’s normal. It’s backlash in the drivetrain, and when you put it into gear you’re moving a 50-70 pound tube of aluminum in one way or another, and it’s not going to stop on a dime etc in a truck.
