I towed 1966 Dodge Coronet from Atlanta, GA to Richmond, VA
The auto trailer and car weighed 5500 pounds, but 2017 1500 5.7 Hemi Ram 3.92 gears ZF8 trans towed it easily.
I pressed Tow/Haul on the dash and, even though the trailer load doubled the weight of the truck, the truck towed, accelerated, and braked with no problem.
I was doing 75mph on the highway and passing vehicles when I needed to, otherwise keeping up with traffic.
Only thing that slowed us down was those annoying signs "No Vehicles with 3 axles or More in Left 2 Lanes". Some bureaucrat must have come up with that for controlling traffic around cities.
U-Haul Auto Trailer tracked straight as an arrow. No whipping.
Overall, very impressed. Wow! Way to go Ram!

You've got a towing monster. Reg cab long box, 5.7, 8spd and 3.92. Im jealous.

Our 3.21 ccsb 8spd hemi struggles a tad on the appalachian pulling our 22ft camper with 5 of us in it.

What was your avg fuel economy? I just towed a 7x14 from Lynchburg Va to Montana. Mine was about 13 using tow haul. I'm crew cab, 5.7, 4x4 3.21, leveled on bils

U can keep the RCSB and the trailer. I'll take the Coronet for $200.00.

Those were great cars, especially if it has a 383 or 440 Magnum.

Yeah, after a lifetime towing RVs with the profile of a sail, hauling vehicles is a pleasure. For my old business I used to have to buy a small-ish delivery type vehicle every few years and would often drive +/- 500 miles to get what I wanted at the price I wanted and bring it home on a Uhaul trailer. The weight is just so much more centered near the ground with minimal wind drag.

You have to understand how they arrived at these numbers. 0 to 15 or 0 to 30 etc, those tests favour off the line performance which is where the 3.92 is going to win, no question.

But if you're towing on the road at speed (the comment about towing in the mountains), gear ratio isn't going to help you in the slightest unless you're traveling at < 20 mph through some tight corners and always dropping into first/second.

I've pulled cars a few times on those u-haul 2 axle trays behind my RCSB (hemi/65rfe/3.55) , highest combined trailer weight around 7800lb and it's been effortless and I've never seen 200F on the transmission temp gauge in 10 years owning this, even towing between AZ and CA.

I expect the LWB trucks are a little better about this, the SWB bears almost no tongue weight before sagging miserably and that's especially tough with the u-haul tray that forces the car to be all the way forward to fit in the tire cups. On paper it says my truck is rated to 9090 pounds, good luck putting 900lbs on the ball and keeping front tires on the ground.

It took less tan 2 full tanks of gas, 577 mile trip. Sorry, but I did not keep track of fuel economy. I filled up before I hitched up in Woodstock Georgia. I stopped once for a refill in North Carolina, added 23.7 gallons. Then drove the rest of the way home. I dropped off the car at my home, then drove to U-Haul and dropped off the trailer, another 20 miles. I still had gas in the tank and didn't fill up again until 3 days later. 32 gallon tank. Just by impression my gas mileage was excellent. Still I was hugely impressed by performance! I was so happy with the truck's abilty to drive almost like it wasn't pulling anything even though the weight was doubled by the trailer and load. Damn! Awesome!

I have a 2012 Ram 1500; 5.7l 6spd w/3.55's. I too was very impressed with the towing capability of my truck. Drug home new (to me) 31' camper weighing 6000ish lbs. No issues...
