I haven’t seen any threads about disabling the MDS on the 2018s. Is it possible? Are guys even doing it anymore? I’d like do ditch the stock exhaust in favor of a louder setup however even the sound of MDS kicking on with the stock setup bothers me. If left alone I can handle the sound, but I’m fairly certain if I added an exhaust, it would drive me nuts.

I have a 2017 1500 and what I do is just use the gear+/- and put it in 8th gear, and viola no more mds. Im sure it works with a column shifter as well. Also a tuner would take care of that. Unfortunately they want some serious $ considering we now have to replace the pcms to do so

If it makes any difference I have a power wagon w/ the 6.4L.

I’m familiar w/ the “8th gear trick” from my days w/ my 2014 1500 but I’m far too lazy to push extra buttons every time I jump in. I appreciate the feedback though.

No problem! I think the only way then would be a tuner

You shouldn’t have an issue. The only time MDS even kicks on in the PW is at an almost completely closed throttle, and the engine sound is too low to really notice it. I had the same concerns you do, and I went with the Mufflex muffler delete. Zero regrets, and like I said the only time I can even barely hear the MDS is when I’m completely off the throttle.

Why is this in the 3rd gen section?

Moved to 4th Gen.

Back to the OP's question, the 2018 PCM encryption hadn't been broken yet last time I checked so removing MDS from the PCM is not doable...yet. Using manual mode on the transmission is the option available at this point.

Or you can leave your gas cap loose and the check engine light will come on and disable the mds, mine was like this for a while until i figured out the gas cap was causing problems

I have a 2017, with a DS T2 and unlocked PCM. So far I have not been able to disable MDS through the tune. It let me choose the option to turn it off, completes the tune but does not disable it at all. I hoping that is just because I'm using the canned DS tune as I'm awaiting my Jay Greene Tune.

I found this out the other day, the check engine light disabling MDS.

Do they have MDS on the 6.4? I thought it was only on the 5.7s? Maybe that's just with the older trucks?

I know I disabled mine with the custom tune. I think that's the only way.

I have a 18 pw and i just hit the + on the shifter until it hits 6 and leave it there. The tranny will still shift by itself all the way till 6th gear and it wont turn on the mds or eco. But of course once you shut off the engine and start it well it goes back to normal

It takes two seconds to put the gear selector in manual mode. For around town I set it in 5. Then when you are getting on the highway turn back on MDS, set cruise, and you will get at least decent MPG for a 8000 pound barge on wheels.
