2019 6.7 burned to the ground

Our local newspaper took a pic of a truck parked on the shoulder of a highway almost fully engulfed, about 80% covered up in flames. The pic showed the truck from behind, with the tailgate area pretty much the only thing not on fire. The caption read, "Chevy BLAZER!"

Losing the truck plain sucks but wasting time over it, sucks even more.
Would not care about blame game or waste tiem assessing it.

Buddy has big, new, Chevy Diesel, for ayear or so, and loves it.
What I was looking for, when I realized I could physically 'get', into a truck, again.
just found this Ram and fell in love, all over again.

This would not scare me away from another cummins Ram.
It;s the exception, not the norm.
On these forums, thats what we mostly read about, not the miles and years
of trouble free, enjoyable, truck ownership but he exceptions to it.
Same for other brands too.

Yes, I was told by a well known pump outfit that the CP4 is substantially less costly, and lighter. All one has to do is look at the two pumps disassembled side by side, and it is plain to see the CP4 is a poor design, from a longevity standpoint. The rest is putting lipstick on a pig.

There is also less lubricity in American diesel vs European and the Bosch (German) CP4 seems to run fine on their diesel.

OMG, I think your that dealer should be involved for sure. Having that fire so soon after the recall, isnt a coincidence. Unlike another poster said here, if mine burnt to the ground like this, I doubt I would get another RAM.

If you buy a Ford with the Powerstroke, you're going to get the CP4 pump. If you buy a GM from I think 2011-2016/2017, you're going to get the CP4 pump as well. I believe this even holds true for the Nissan Titan XD.

This is an unfortunate fluke more than anything. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another Ram if I needed the towing power of a diesel. Both of my 6.7s far outperformed my last Powerstroke and my dad's Duramax.

I "believe" that in late 21 some Rams were leaving the factory with the CP3 pump again. Both my Cummins had those and I never had one issue with them. OP, if you don't mind a used one I might suggest looking for a 2015-2018 3500. To this day it was the best truck I have ever owned.

That may be so, and if it is, the remedy is quite simple, no CP4 equipped engine should be sold here.

The fact remains, though that it is an inferior design from the get-go. Super aggressive cam, a non-indexed roller follower, and a flow design that ejects debris to everything downstream. It's a POS.

I wouldn't pass on it. That fuel pump has ruined a lot of engines.

I would too if I had the diesel. I'm just imagining what an insurance company would say if my truck burned up and the cause turned out to be a known issue that i could have had fixed for free. I was actually in a similar problem with my Polaris snowmobile last fall. That one was an issue with the electric fuel pump inside the gas tank where Polaris had issued a do not ride statement. It's a 2019 sled and it never burned up before but what if....

Fire marshal doesn't look in to vehicle fires in any jurisdiction I'm aware of, but maybe other places do it different. Unless arson is suspected, any fire forensic work would be private party hired.

Personally, I'd go with my insurance and let them go after the dealer. They have Investigations personnel if they choose to go after the dealer in turn.

To get a good lawyer involved. Insurance companies hate paying out. If my vehicle caught fire right after a shop worked on the fuel system, id have it towed to the shop and call my insurance.

what about brakes? if he had just left the dealership after a brake job under warranty and driving home they go out is he still screwed? or if the dealership had put on a new tire under warranty, and on the drive home the same wheel comes flying off, is he still screwed? they don't have any liability for anything, ever, only because they don't want to/choose not to "entertain" it???

EDIT: and Hoot, I'm not trying to get into a squabble with you. I'm just saying it's insane to think you'd drop off a vehicle with them for mechanical work with there basically being no assurances about anything.

I am only talking about fires because of the severe nature of destruction they involve and the evidence many times is destroyed to a point that proving actual cause short of an expensive forensic investigation is beyond most owners means short of a civil action. Not saying it is right, just what they do and the other automakers do the same thing when it comes to fires that encapsulate the whole vehicle in fire damage.

Guy got millions, when all said and done.
RR Injury trial, not Truck fire.

99.9% people want their vehicle replaced yesterday and are going to go the insurance route anyways and leave it to the insurance company if they want to subrogate the claim with FCA which most will not.

Ok fair enough. Different by area, but either way you have to prove they caused the problem and it isn't going to be easy.

any thoughts
I picked up my 2019 6.7l from the dealership after having the y78 HPFP recall completed
after stopping at home to pick up the wife and went to go shopping. after on the way home smoke started to come into the cab by the time i got to the side of the road smoke was billowing out of the hood. than the fire soon after needles to say I watched my 2500 burn to a pile of burnt steel. I drove the truck a total of 23 mile since i picked it up i really do not know my next step after I contacted my insurance and got the claim started any help would be greatly appreciated

When my 6.7 caught fire, I was lucky I had a fire extinguisher to stop what happened to you. My cause was a bolt came out of my exhaust manifold and caught the fire retardant on fire. Melted a lot of wire insulation and such. I hope you had the wrecker haul it back to the dealership that did the work on the truck. Now comes the hard part. Fighting with insurance and dealaership.

My only Ram diesel source tells me his '22 came with a CP-3 from the factory and that Ram recalled some to convert the CP-4 back to a CP-3.
