1st post here. I pulled the pin and bought my first new diesel, (my others were used). Is there a specific way to break-in the engine and rear end in ... deal was not specific about details. Please advise.

I believe that manual states not to tow before 500 miles. Since my camper is 10k+, I wanted until I had 1000 miles on it. Not sure it was necessary.

The manual includes a small paragraph on not towing for the first 500 miles.

As far as other "break in" processes the manual is silent. You could research the subject online but Ram doesn't recommend anything besides the towing comment.

Congratulations on the new rig can’t wait to see pictures. Welcome to the family. There is plenty of reading to do on break in periods. While your researching stick to the basics that stay relative throughout owner ship. Change fluids early and often, never accelerate hard until you’re at operating temperature. Keep your fuel tank full to avoid condensation and so on.
Treat it right and it will return the favor

I’m not an expert but I have asked experts who service my industrial diesel engines. I plan on a break-in period of 15 hours

- don’t drive it hard and don’t excessively idle
- operate in the peak torque range, between 1700-1800 rpm
- moderate loads at the 10 hour mark, on and off

This routine fits with the 500 mile guideline but for me it is not the duration but what you are doing in that break-in that makes the difference.

Thank you all for the replies. I have a trip to South Florida from Wisconsin end of April pulling a 9K trailer. I will try to drive easy, and get at least 2k miles on her before that long pull of around 3000 mile round trip. Should I change oil and filter before trip ( always did that in old days with new gas engines) or should I just drive and wait until I am closer to 10k miles or so before I change oil the first time?

I am also considering getting a larger fuel tank for longer stretches' while pulling.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Bob.

There is no engine break in on the cummins, the 500 mile is only for no load on the rear differential. Oil change is at 15K or 6 months.

Drive it and enjoy.

Right from the owner's manual:

Put that engine to work on e the "break in" is done or it may die of boredom..
