Help needed....

I recently purchased a 2022 1500 5.7 v8 with roughly 45k miles on it. I love the truck due to its cab size, smooth ride and performance at higher speeds. I bought in doing what I felt was thorough research although I fully admit I am trying to build my mechanical mind in the truck world and have mostly ridden a motorcycle my adult driving life.
After roughly 8k additional miles, I noticed what sounded like the heavily mentioned exhaust manifold issue/ tick noise I have read about in other forums. I brought the truck to a RAM dealer who said it was indeed the exhaust manifold issue and that the passenger side was replaced per manufacturer warranty and that driver side would likely also need to be replaced knowing the issue.

Long story long, they later called and abruptly told me the passenger side was fixed and to come pick up the truck.
After asking about whether or not they looked at/fixed the driver side, the service member gave me the runaround before finally stating that the driver side was not fixed, it most likely needs to be done but that the parts were on backorder and ultimately that it passed the mechanic's tests and everything sounded good to go...
I was confused and due to a very pregnant wife, decided not to raise absolute hell and to go calmly pick up the truck.
Shortly after picking up the truck, I noticed the tick sound still present...Feeling conned and wanting to stay as cool as possible, I called another local dealership to get a second opinion, who stated that they have the driver side manifold parts available and would take a look at the truck for me, AND that they also don't know why dealership 1 told me they didn't have the parts because they often times use the same exact warehouse......

Long story longer, 2nd dealership later calls back and tells me that the tick noise is actually the dreaded lifter tick, and not to worry because all parts are still under warranty and that they would happily perform the work per warranty and if there were metal shavings or pieces found, they would replace the entire engine completely free.

My fear is that dealership 2 puts a bandaid on this thing, my truck very soon reaches the life of its powertrain warranty and then I am SOL.

I have a baby on the way and as imagined have begun freaking THE F$#^ out over finances...

I am seeking help, advice, tips, etc on how to either adequately remedy this issue through the warranty channel and ensure they aren't just slapping bandaids on things until the manufacture powertrain warranty expires, OR to fix this issue with aftermarket parts in the most reliable or affordable way possible. What kind of money am I looking at that way? I've read about deletes, BD manifolds, and after market camshafts.....I need help.

Any meaningful ideas, shared experience, thoughts, prayers etc is deeply appreciated.

Good Morning,

Me personally I wouldn't sweat it, now that sounds easier said than done, I know. However, I have 130k on my Ram, only major issues fixed were Transmission (under warranty) and I had the passenger side head and lifters replaced due to broken bolt I could not extract. I had a mobile Mechanic do the work. That was at 100k and no issues. Now, I run hot shots FR3 nano particles in engine to reduce the wear and keep the lifter and cam lubricated. I do recommend changing oil every 3-4k as I do. These trucks naturally tick. I've gone mad trying to figure out each tick I hear, you'll stress yourself out. These trucks are pretty good, I hated Ram prior to my purchase. But overall I've been impressed with power and reliabilty. However, after the lifter replacement, I do recommend replacing the oil again to get metal shavings out. I've seen many of these trucks reach well above 200K with no major issues. Just my opinion. But hope it does well.

Ram Dealerships will not use aftermarket parts, only OEM.The Dealership 2 sounds a little more reliable at this point.Like every Dealership they will fix it according to the the way Stellantis tells them to because it is warranty.ALL THE BEST WITH YOUR GROWING FAMILY.

I deeply appreciate the responses and will add the hot shots to my future maintenance regimen. I'm still waiting to hear back from the 2nd dealership to find out what they're going to do and will keep this thread updated along the way in hopes of helping anyone else who may encounter similar problems.

welcome.gif to Ram Forum.

And thanks in advance for keeping your thread up to date.
This adds great value to the site and, as you mentioned, could help another member.

Ram trucks can be lots of fun to own, drive and modify. There are many threads covering everything from small mods to highly technical modifications to improve performance and the subjective fun factor.

Try out the search utility in the upper-right corner.
Happy surfing and welcome to the Ram Family.

Hi there! An event as such can be understandably annoying, and we would like to see what information we can find in order to potentially ease your concerns. When able, DM us with the above information, your VIN, and the name of the dealership you've worked with.

UPDATE:

The 2nd dealership submitted everything to Stellantis and the work was approved to purchase and install a remanufactured engine. My understanding is that the warranty on the engine resets to 3 years 100,000, the rest of the powertrain remains under the original warranty until expiration. Roughly 10 day turnaround for the work to be performed and they provided me with a rental car.

Is my understanding correct in that performing more frequent oil changes diminishes the chance of the lifter failure? Other than previously mentioned tips, is there anything else I can do to prevent this when the new engine arrives?

seems fishy

That is good news. The Dealership has done right by you.To give my opinions, change oil at 3 to 5000miles(I stick to a 3000mile schedule) intervals.Read some of the prior posts that recommend) what oil, many recommend Redline,or Amsoil oil, oil viscosity (I use 5w30 year round on my 2023 5.7 Classic) ,and the best oil filters are recommended by members on this site on different posts,I recommend ,if you can find Royal Purple oil filters but my understanding is they have been out of stock, everywhere, for many many months, and won't be back soon. The ideal filter will have good flow(doesn't impede oil pressure) and be able to trap the smallest particles, preferable in a synthetic filter media with a wire mesh.I don't think there is a consensus on the very best filter available, yet.

I'd ask for a new long block, why should you have to settle for a reman?

Good that they're taking care of you, but.....

I appreciate the response. I’m currently trying to grow my mechanical mind…
Can you explain how the long block would help offset these issue?
And what is the likelihood that they would actually replace this engine with a long block?

Thank you!

I dont know that it would, just that it's a brand new engine.

I don't have any experience with reman stuff, but it kinda scares me a little.

Is it a factory reman, or some other outfit?

Is 3 years a good warranty?

Do you drive alot? If not, 3 years is not very many miles.

I'm not trying to scare you, I'm just a natural skeptic. It's how I'm wired.

I don't know the likelyhood of the replacement. It might be standard practice that they go reman.

There's a few members on here that work at dealerships, so they would be more in tune with normal procedures.

I am fairly sure,Stellantis has their own factory reman source they use which is their own brand,at least that was the case when I worked at a Chrysler dealer, years back, before becoming a wing of Stellantis.Your Dealership can confirm that I also suspect you will get a long block. They will transfer everything over, like waterpump etc. from your original motor(again from my experience at a Chrysler Dealership years ago).Again just ask your Dealership, and they will tell you...

I recently spoke to a rep from Ram and the dealership, they are indeed replacing with a reman. Thank you for your response. Do you have any other advice or tips other than more frequent oil changes and oil types/ avoiding long periods of idle to avoid the lifter failure issue?

I have 2010 Ram. I use it mostly for towing a 7000lb travel trailer. I dont accelerate hard ever and I never let it idle more than necessary. Its only got 115000km on it right now. I've had the broken exhaust bolts 90K ,first the passenger side and about 4000km later the drivers side broke. I'm 70 years old now, plan on being around

a least another 20 so this trucks gota last. MY entire driving life I've never let an engine warm up sitting still, I just start it go easy. I also use Amsoil. Seems to be working for me and change at the recommended milage. I'm a retired Millwright and can tell ya synthetic has worked when regular oils were failing. I'm sure there are few out there that would say I should be warming up my engine buts that's how I roll and so far it been working out ok. I had 83 Nissan sentra pruchaced new put 482000 km on it until I was rear-ended. Engine was running like a top. Never warmed it up.

I just joined the new engine group on my 2021 with 68000 miles after last week…metal in the oil control valve…owned since early 2022 and I do all the oil changes at 3-4000 miles…covered by my Maxcare I purchased 5 years ago. Very expensive if out of pocket for sure….good luck in your repairs..funny thing I replaced the original battery 3 weeks ago and had since 2021..guess it’s all working out!
