I'm ordering a new 2500 6.4L mega cab in a couple weeks. It'll be in the Big Horn trim level with a few extras. The big one for me is the sno-cheif package for snow plowing later down the road. That gets me the anti spin rear but cant decide if i really need the 4.10s or 3.73s. I've seen other threads where a lot of guys say their not buying it for gas mileage and i get that im not either. I am buying this to daily drive in no salt seasons which will be about 10k miles a year but towing my tractor (9k lbs.) about 6 times or more for 400 miles round trip a season. I'll also be towing my boat (8k lbs.) about 2 times a year for 160 miles. Then there is firewood and log hauling which is around 10k lbs about 5 or 6 times a year.

With all that said I'm not towing at the max for the 3.73s but within 3k lbs. and this in hills of southern NY. Would it be wise to get 4.10s? I do want better gas mileage as more miles between fill ups on long trips but if I'm talking like 30 more miles i wont fret over it. Any suggestions or mpg examples to compare 4.10 to 3.73 would be great.

I doubt there is any real difference in MPG.
Go with the 4.10
You will go with a larger RV, that's the way it goes, no one goes smaller voluntarily.
Also, if you go with larger tires, you want the 4.10

Yeah didn't think about larger tires, i am planning a trip from NY to MT for an elk hunt I'm pulling my dad's TT it's smaller around 7k lbs. But not sure how the truck would like pulling at high altitude

2500 6.4L Hemi 4.10's 'Off-Road'
Like said, you will likely barely notice the MPG difference and may even get better in town mileage with the 4.10s. Highway the 3.73's would be better but as a guess maybe $5-10/tank? I would go 4.10's so you are covered if you do decide to tow heavier.

I had the choice when I ordered my 2021 2500 long box. Drove both, ordered the 3:73, and I have the Off road and snowplow packages on mine. The 6.4 has more than enough torque and HP to turn 35", factory tires are 33", tires or to pull. I would not put on anything bigger than 35s for regular highway use. Between trailer tow mode and the eight speed there is no problem keeping the revs in the right zone for pulling hills. I do not tow a lot, maybe 25% of the time. The 4:10 gears are a left over from the days of 3 and 4 speed automatic transmissions.

I have a 2020 with 4.10's and if I could get 4.56 I would. If ordering crazy not to get the deepest gears available. You will not see one iota difference in real world mpg and these things loaf along at 80mph so you will not feel like you are over geared. I live in Montana and no way would I get 3.73's if I had a choice especially on a mega cab with snow plow package. big heavy rig. down the road people looking to buy it when you sell it will want 4.10's too.

4:10s increase you RPM about 10% over 3:73s, so at 2000 with 3.73 you will be at 2200 with 4:10s. At 65 mph, with 33" tires and the 373 gears, my 2500 is doing just on 1600 rpm in 8th gear. With 4.10s that would be 1760. Not a lot of difference one way or the other.

I've had both, and definitely preferred the 4.10's

I’ve had both, go with the 4.10’s, fuel mileage difference is not noticeable. But the pulling power is. I have a 33’ 5th wheel.

I have 3.73 with the 8 speed transmission. I have no issues pulling my 5w, but if I had the option to get 4.10 when I bought my truck, I would have opted for them. I really don't know that the 4.10's make a big difference with the 8 speed transmission, but since you're ordering a truck, you may as well get them rather than saying later you wish you had.

Yeah, but your tires are only 33.8" , no need to regear for that size tire

You'll run out of towing capacity before you notice a problem towing with the 3.73. I have towed extensively in NY as well as the mountains in the East with 2500s, both 5.7 and 6.4. Never a problem. Good luck with your order and enjoy the ride!

With the 4:10's and 6.4 in my PW, it's an awesome combination for low end power and torque.

4:10 also gives better holdback downhills.
I changed out my 3:73 because I went 18” and the roads I frequented with my load kept me at 1500-1600. Too slow and always causing me to shift.
