I have a 2014 2500 that just had the lifter failure. I have a line on a 2023 6.4L charger engine with 24K on it. AI and write ups advise that it should go in easily enough but a new intake is required. I've searched the forum but can't find a reason why. Can I use the stock intake off the Charger and just reroute / fab an airbox up?

Any cons to using a car engine?

Is it out of an auto or manual? If it's auto you'll. Have an mds failure again. If it's manual it doesn't have mds. This is the way to go. I did it and won't go back.

Reuse your stock 5.7 intake or hunt up a truck 6.4 intake. The alternator is in the way to use the car intake. The trucks mount the alternator right where the cars intake makes the swing over to the drivers side, the truck intake swings to the passenger side and mounts the airbox on the passenger side, while the cars mount the airbox on the drivers side .You'll need to reuse your timing cover,as they're differant. You'll also need to swap oil pans and oil pump pick-up tubes as the cars use an aluminium front sump pan that won't fit a truck . You'll need to have it tuned, and the car 6.4 uses at a mininium 91 octane fuel, and is happier on 93 or 94.
Being the engines out of a Charger it'll have MDS,i don't put much stock in MDS being the cause of lifter failures,as the non-mds lifters fail just as often as the mds lifters do,throw in the fact 6 speed Challengers which are non-mds suffer lifter failures just as much as the automatic versions with mds do.
You could throw an aftermarket non-mds cam in it,while you have the engine apart to swap timing covers/oilpans etc,as it's alot easier to put a cam in the engine while it's on an engine stand.
To make life easier you could also reuse all your old sensors.
You do realize you're going to have to tune the truck afterwards, and buy the expensive higher octane fuel for it to be happy and live

Yes, I'm aware of the custom tune and higher octane requirements.

Thank you for the detailed reply.

Odds are you'll also have to swap out the pilot bushing in the back of the crank so your torque convertor will fit.The engine would of had the 8HP70 behind it in a Charger, and i think it'll have a differant pilot bushing from what you need. Dealer should be able to get you the proper bushing,as you'd just order one for a 2014 2500.

Yeah or buy one, the bushing is the a8 bushing if you end up looking for one.

Thanks for the response. I'm in the midst of the swap. I didn't realize that I was starting with a 5.7 2500 without MDS.

I quickly realized this once I pulled the intake.

Can I use the 2023 charger 6.4 in my '14 without hooking up the mds and without changing the cam? Essentially just ignore it and just connect to the VVT solenoid?

The 6.4 only has 24,000 on it and I got it for a good price. I could easily sell it and get a 5.7 for less and just go that route.

Are you putting the engine in a 2500? If you're putting it in a 1500,i'd leave the mds hooked up,as the lifter bores actually get more oil when it's in mds mode, they use oil pressure to push the pins in on the mds lifters, plus mds has squat to do with lifter failure. Up the idle rpm to at least 750 rpm via your tuner,as the cam lobes and lifter wheels are strictly oiled by the oil flung off the crankshaft, they're hung out in the open in the crankcase, and there is no pressurized oil fed to the cam lobe or lifter wheel. If you take the oil pan and windage tray off the bottom of the engine, you can actually see the cam lobes if you use a small mirror

It's going into a 2500, originally without MDS

Then you're better off replacing the cam with a non-mds cam and non-mds lifters, and installing the factory mds delete plugs. 6 speed 5.7 and 6.4 Challengers are factory non-mds engines,so you could stuff a factory stock 6.4 cam and lifters in it,if you wanted,me i'd step up to an aftermarket cam,but alot of guys prefer to use factory parts
