Is there much of a difference between the two when it comes to the potential performance and Mpg gains when combined with a Vararam? I've got a 2013 Sport CC Hemi 8 speed with the vararam and a Catch Can installed already and want to upgrade the exhaust, and I'm not sure if there's any difference between the two muffler options besides the mufflex being something I can install myself.

Also is there anything else that should be done to improve the exhaust in addition to the muffler? My end game is to increase mpg as much as possible, the added HP being a fun bonus. I just want to make sure that there isn't something else that if not done, makes the muffler swap a waste of time.

Depends on your budget. Clearly the Mufflex solution is 100% plug and play, while a 22" universal will require some 3" and maybe some 2.5" sleeve pipe as well as various clamps, and a torch to bend the hangers. I can say with some farting around and plenty of tools, the universal solution can take 4 hours. :grd:

Yea price wise I see the difference, and I would just pay someone capable to install the 22" anyway, so I'm just looking to see if there's any real performance difference between the two.

Also, is the mufflex useless if I don't replace the y pipe too?

I doubt very much there would be any performance gain delta between a 22" and 24" muffler from the same manufacturer (assuming all else is equal)
I originally thought of replacing the Y too, but after much reading decided it was overkill for my mod level.

Replacing your muffler will net you likely .000000 MPG change.
A muffler replacement is done for a nice sound and little more on these trucks.

The main reason to go with the Mufflex is that it's all stainless pipe like the factory.
A muffler shop will very likely use aluminized steel to make any adaptations they need, and thus you'll have a spot to corrode in your exhaust system. Not cool IMO.

I thought it would help maximize the vararam, no?

You might get 1MPG from the CAI.
If you're chasing MPG by buying mods you'd be farther ahead to save the $$ for gas, and keep your tires inflated, air filter clean and remove unnecessary weight from the truck.
But I'm not a vendor trying to sell parts...

Audio makes a good point.
The engineers aren't stupid, and pretty well everything from stock airbox's to throttle bodies are generally sized right for the engine,so expecting big gains from a CAI/ported throttle body or muffler swap on a basically stock truck will probably leave you slightly disappointed,as there won't be as big a gain as you've been lead to believe .
This isn't the smogger 70's anymore, the factory engineers have the stock engine figured out pretty damn good, and a 1,000 dollars worth of bolt-on parts aren't going to give you as much gain as you'd think.

It's been proven that adding a CA I typically results in lower MPG. Adding more air results in a lean condition which is counteracted by adding more fuel. You'll get more performance out of the vehicle but it'll use marginally more fuel. The only exception is if you're able to not dive into the skinny pedal and conservatively use the increased power for more mileage.

I've already gained 1.5 mpg on average from stock once I installed the vararam, so I'm not disappointed at all with that purchase (especially since it was a gift lol). Like Cthulhu said, I only hammer the skinny pedal once in a while when I have a passenger who is being introduced to the truck, and with the amount of highway driving I do, I got noticeable increases in mpg. Filled up on Sunday and EVIC says 20.1 halfway through the tank. Highest I had before the vararam was 18.5 on EVIC I think.

If you guys all say the muffler won't do anything but sound different, it's no skin off my back...I appreciate you saving me the money because I don't care the slightest bit about sound. This is why I love this forum!

That's what we're here to do! :angels25:

I want a muffler to make the truck sound like a damned truck! :gunner:

Well I mean yea that does kinda sound appealing, but I'm coming from a 205hp Lexus IS250 sooooo to me right now she sounds enough like a truck haha.

Although I did just watch someone else's video they posted of their 14" and his truck just sounded violent, in a good way haha.

Replacing the stock muffler with a better flowing muffler will help, but it is not a noticeable mod that you will feel in the seat. Same goes for mileage...you might gain .5mpg, but that rarely happens. Usually when you install a new muffler, you are so excited about the nice tone that it is hard to keep your foot out of the pedal.

As for the differences between the 22" and 24", the 22" is actually a bit quieter. The 22" has a 5x11" body whereas the 24" has a 5x8" body. The 22" is what Magnaflow decided to use in their full catback system, and it sounds great.
