Has anyone here changed gears from 3.92 to 4.88 gears. If so was it worth the cost?

That should be a noticeable difference and will definitely help with running bigger tires.

Let us know if we can help and quote you on any parts. We can usually offer very good pricing on Yukon! Send me a message.

Whether it is worth the cost or not depends on what you are going to do with the truck and how much of the work are you willing or able to do yourself. The difference in acceleration will be very noticeable. The cost will also depend on whether you have a 4x4 or a 2x4. Gears and install kits can be purchased from Moe's Performance, a preferred vendor on this forum. If you have a 4x4 it's a whole different ball game as far as work and price is concerned.

If I even think about a gear swap, my wife will take a 2x4 to my head!

4.56 is the limit.
Yes if you like performance & have larger tires & or the 5/6-speed transmission.

Are you saying that 4.88's are not available or they will not fit the carrier, or that the carrier would have to be machined?

If he has an 8 speed, he will definitely run out of motor before the end of the quarter---he might be good in an 1/8th, but I'm not sure

I had a 2013 with the 6 speed tranny and my 410's was about as big as I could go. To fit the 456 I would need to grind the housing to get them to fit. Not sure if the 488 would fit. I would check with Matt at Moes performance, he will be able to tell you for sure what you can and cant do. If I remember correctly he has a option to get the 456 to fit with no grinding, but I'm not 100%.

Ya. I'd like to know if 4.88 is possible in a 1500 ram. But perhaps 4.56 will make a difference as well

I can attest. No grinding needed on 4.56 and Matt is the man.

I see I was wrong on the 4.88 on 2-wheel drive, odd that Moe's Performance does not list since he sells Yukon gears.

Maybe he doesn't sell enough of the 4.88's to stock them----I don't really know. I can't remember any members saying they were running 4.88's but the 4.56's are getting really popular.

It's taken a while for it to soak in that as good as the 8 speed is, the only real way to deal with 3.21s is toss them into the recycling.

4.10s, and 4.56s should have been a special order option.

In years to come, the guys who know what they're doing, will be willing to pay more for a used Ram with lower rear end gears than for a comparable model Ram the 3.21s

I would say it's situational on what gears to run.

Anything that involves a positive displacement blower or nitrous stay with a taller gear.

If you switch to say a 28" tall slick that will change the effect gear ratio to unusable if you have enough power.

If you're like me and don't plan to drag race and stay on oversized tires, gears are the best bang for the buck.

People tell me I'm crazy for trying to sell my 2nd gen for more because of lower gears and all the other mods. I tell them they are welcome to go buy another ram and do everything to it themselves. Good luck coming in cheaper than what I'm selling my truck for lol
