I have a 1978 dodge ram 5.2 the I am putting 1985 5.2 motor in, while adding the fuel pump cam I noticed the timing chain had about ½+ inch slack in it, so I ordered a new set and wouldn’t ya know it also has about a ½ inch slack in it. it was ordered on line (cloyes). Is this normal or should it be tight?

1/2 inch slack on 1 side of the chain wouldn't be bad

The block may have been line honed and the crank is slightly higher in the block. It's not common for mopars to need this as the high nickel content reduces core shift. If there is a1/2 in of total slack your probably alright. If it a 1/2 in in either direction totalling 1 in then it is excessive and I would take it to a machine shop to be measured so you can get the right chain.

I have no clue if it will fit on the LA motor, but the V6 and magnum motors have a timing chain tensioner available from mopar - it works very well - I just don't know if it will work in a LA version with a fuel pump.
I want to think the pump rod will not allow it, but someone who knows more on this aspect might chime in.

1/2" slop is nothing to worry about. Though if the play is the same, I would use the pre-stretched old chain :)
