hey guys, i am seriously considering buying my friends 2006 ram 1500. however occasionally there is a stalling issue where it shuts off while driving but it just turns back on when he cranks it. how serious is this, what causes it, and is it expensive to repair? thank you.

I'm gonna need some more information before I can even come close to telling you what may be wrong.

Which motor is in the truck? How many miles are on the truck? Miles on the engine and trans? Maintenance up to date? Major repairs recently? When does it stall? Driving around town or out on the highway at speed?

There could be a multitude of things that can cause the engine to stall while driving. Is the check engine light on? Does it come on and go off? Can you get a scan tool connected to the truck at your local parts store and see if any DTC's are active or stored?

After dealing with my stalling issue for sometime now, I finally got it fixed. My issue with stalling was happening after I filled the gas tank. Many others have had this same issue and there is tons of post on this topic throughout the forum and internet. The problem with all the forums and websites out there is was that nobody had one actual fix for it. So after reading multiple posts and ideas I decided to have the whole tank and fuel pump replaced to the tune of about $1500. Since the replacement, I have no more stalling issues. From what I gather, there is a valve on top of these tanks that over time become stuck open and once you fill the tank up the gas can bypass the valve thus entering the EVAP system which causes the system to shutdown. The EVAP system is working as it should, but unfortunately the only solution is to replace the tank.

Hope this helps

There could be a multitude of things that can cause the engine to stall while driving.

Pine Hollow Diagnostics youtube channel had a case of a 4.7 doing this once it reached 3000 RPM and stalled with no codes. Found a short within a coil was the culprit. Like FastMopar said....could be lots of things.
