for a long time , I have really wanted a 3rd gen. I think the size and ability is perfect.
The reason I have not pulled the trigger is I need a capable vehicle. I do around 25-30k a year with half of that dirt for work.
I am seriously considering finding a decent condition one and putting the money into preventive / current maintenance needs.
From what I can see I could go PW or I could go diesel and build into a PW.
Outside of horrible mpg with a PW, what are the other concerns of DD'ing the PW? I am more familiar with the 5.9 / 6.7 .
Thank You

The mileage of a pw won't be that much different than a normal 2500. Larger tires and the little lift won't do you any favors, but will likely be a smaller change than going from a 1500 to a 2500 in general.

Mine is a 3rd get ST, but I've done a Eibach level (coils and shocks), Bilstein shocks in the rear, removed the front sway bar, I used to be on 35x12 MTs but I went down to 33x10.5 recently. I'm considering the Carli progressive rear leafs but haven't decided yet.

I try not to get too carried away, but I've been down some pretty awful roads and never been even close to stuck. Also tows great, typically pull at max GCWR and probly overloaded on payload a few times a year when hauling cows and a few other random things. Hauling cows is fun, when you weight 24k and then have to flex it out through a ditch and up into the field that is muddy half the time.

An actual pw would be good if you do a lot of off-road, or what you do is pretty serious stuff, but a standard 2500 with the correct mods can do quite a bit.

(old pic - different wheels and removed the flares since then)

Thanks for the honest review, I know a lot about hauling and feeding cows ha ha.
I am a range manager / rider for the cattelmans. I work all open range stuff. I am hauling horses way up on those grazing leases. Horrible roads but a good time ha ha
I have a 2018 ram 3500. It's a great truck. I have the fox/thuren set up and a new steering brace.
Honestly it's big for the mountains and a 3500 just beats you up off-road. I guess I could put 10k into a Carli setup but hard for me to get my head around. I also can never see over the hood on the steep stuff and I am starting to get a lot of sensors firing off in strange ways. Low coolant , abs, sticking in 4x4 Lo.

This is why I started looking at 3rd gen. I like the proportions better.
I pull a 2 horse with a live in, plus my horse. I could get a a single horse w/ a live in which would shed some weight.
I am torn between gas / diesel. I do love diesel but gosh gas would be easy to deal with .

For daily driving a PW really isn't much different than a regular 2500. The PW has a slightly larger tire and basically a leveling kit on it (and you can get the 4.10 gears optional on a regular 2500). For the size if you have a dually longbed 3500 now it would be a little shorter and not quite as wide. The factory suspension is a lot better on the PW versus a stock 3500.

A 3rd gen will have 4.56 gears, so if it’s healthy, it should pull well. It won’t tow as well as your ‘18 Cummins, but will definitely be way more comfortable off pavement. I have a nice ‘05 PW on my radar, but SWiMBO wants a 4th gen. I have learned to pick my battles.
