Hello,

The 4.7L High idle seems to be a commonly searched questions, with not a lot of answers.

This is likely because the 4th Gen Rams, only the 2013 came with the 4.7L.

The idle starts at 1400, then reduces to 1100 after a minute, and then settles at 700 according to the OBD.

Thus far I have cleaned the throttle body, and checked the PCV valve and hose for vacuum leakage. Both are normal.

What are the next steps?

The 4.7 was available in the years prior to 2013. 2013 was the last year it was offered in the trucks, but it wasn't the only year you could get it,lol. It's been a few years since i had a dyno tuned 2013 4.7,but it used to take a bit of time for the idle to come down and stablize after starting. If this is a new problem, might be time for a tune-up with new plugs/air filter etc

This is completely normal. My 2013 4.7L does this regularly on first start.

Yes, you are right. It was available from 2006-2013 in this configuration. I'll check the plugs, but I've never known worn plugs to cause a high idle. Thanks

Its new to me. My truck used to start and go straight into idle at 700 rpm.

It’s odd if it goes straight to idle rpm at startup. The computer is programmed to high idle at startup for oil pressure and primarily to help warm the cats up faster for emissions. Same reason why with cold starts the engines dump fuel in to help warm everything up.

You had the oddest 4.7 ever then,as even the Hemi's idle high for a bit at start-up. I know my old 13 4.7 always took a bit before it came down to a stabile idle at around 6/700 rpm. Do all 16 plugs ,throw a new air filter in it and probably clean the throttle body and check the pcv,see if it makes a differance
