I've been thinking about a 408 stroker for awhile and I shouldve done it when i rebuilt my motor but...yeah. Anyways my question is to do a stroker kit now, what would I all need? Just a stroker crankshaft and new tune? Or am I missing something? I haven't been able to find an answer to my question yet from searching.

Crank, rods, pistons, bore the block. I would suggest a new valvetrain to match your displacement gain. Cam, lifters, pushrods, and springs at a minimum but if you increase lift any considerable amount you'll need to machine the guide bore down, use modified keepers or use aftermarket heads and yes you'll need a tune, I would also recommend a m1 intake and port the heads if your not going to replace them.... No sense in adding cubes if you can't feed it.
Not to mention you'll want to do some trans work aswell

What Rowdyram posted and Injector's, return type fuel delivery system, Wideband 02 gauge, high stall tq converter, flow the heads, Stainless one piece valve's. Do it right and you will drop $10k fast.

could go with a carb on the stroker and not worry about the emissions

There are 408 stroker motors that can be found in the 5-7k range

Then you can use your motor for alot of parts (water pump, alternator ) etc

blueprint engines comes to mind....there are more out there

What tranny to go behind the carb motor? the 46re will not like it one bit.

So 10k is about right say $6000 for the motor another $3000 for a built auto trany, add a G for other stuff then add taxes.

Haha well I already spend $2k for this 360 I rebuilt, I was just thinking a stroker wouldn't be a whole lot more. From what I read everyone was doing a motor rebuild and went with a stroker so I thought I could just put a new crankshaft in my new motor. But if a "right" stroker kit is at least 6k I'd imagine forced induction, supercharger, wouldn't be far behind that?

if you go carb you could easily adapt a 727 for alot less than 3k

heck you can find a used one for less than 500, say you stick 1000 into a full rebuild, your only at 1500

On craigslist (if you trust it) you can find 318s, 340s and 360s ready to run for a good deal! with a trans your less than 5k, just need to install it.

Also, say you dont do a stroker, if power is what your after you could do a supercharger on your stock motor for more power

if it were me, i keep the truck the way it is, save the money, buy a mid 70s truck down south that came factory with the 360 or even a 383/440

you could be in a truck about 5-7k but then you have classic BBM power

Lots of ideas, if buying a truck is out of the question, and you want to use your existing truck, id suggest a supercharger...i think vortec makes a kit for our trucks...(maybe??)

how fast you want to go is only determined by how much you want to spend on it!

if money was no object...id throw a cummins in it, with a big turbo....run 50+ pounds of boost with a water/**** injection

heck go nuts...135 lbs of boost in a first gen....this is my dream truck for a DD!! :flipthebird:

Haha I've always wanted a diesel and almost bought a 24v here a few weeks ago but the guy never got back to me for over 2 weeks. I'd love a diesel but they're expensive let's not lie. Power is easy with them but just about everything else is expensive compared to a gasser. Later down the road I really wanna find a 440 and stroke that out if not the. Id settle for a 360 and make that a project. I'm iust tossing ideas in my head for my truck right now, just thinking about more power options.

i think i read somewhere that you had your motor already re-done?

If your looking to spend 1500-2000 id strongly suggest new gears!

I dont know what you want to spend, but new gears in my truck made a huge improvement!

But, again, they are not cheap. if its in your budget...id go that way....trust me you will enjoy them!

If this was going to be an open clean start from scratch build then the thread should have been started as such. I was trying to stay within the 2nd gen area for parts changing to a 727 trany, junk yard parts was not on the table.

I could have build a 408 long ago and more than once had the opt to do it, nope I like my 365 just fine. If I want more cid than big block it would be.

Sorry guys I was just finding out some info on a stroker. I should've put some more info in my op, but my 365 only has 6,300 miles on it. I'm regearing for 35's so I'm already cashing on gears. One day I'll get a BB for a project. I was just curious on options for my motor now.

The sky is the limit for options with the engine you have. Ultimately we can suggest forced induction, more cubes, nitrous, big blocks or whatever what it comes down to is how much power YOU want what rpm range you want it how much $ you want to spend and how street able you want it. If you know the answers to these questions it will point you to the answer

Yep I know, I figured I could ask someone who knows more about stroking an engine to answer my question since everything I found wasn't quite the answers I needed. Also a supercharger kit from Procharger is around $5,600. That's with everything needed. I might look into finding a little less pricey way of doing a supercharger if that can be had.

Thanks Merc for the link, I'll have to snoop around Dakota forums and see what I can find.

No problem bud :). You could have built up that 365 up very nicely with some other internal parts like higher comp ratio pistons and some worked over heads when you did it. If you start a 408 build make sure you start a thread about it here on RF.

Good luck with your hunt. Ya know there was a guy here that was saying or trying to figure out if he should sell his supercharger kit, thing is I don't remember who that was.

Thanks guys :) one more thing tho, I'm thinking about replacing my head bolts, since I reused the old ones not sure if that was smart. So if I replace them I might get the heads worked on( port and polish?). Also I seen that I can use thinner head gaskets to raise compression a bit more. Is there some truth to that?
