JJ...Have the 55w kits become more reliable? Had horrible problems on my old 09 Cummins with this same kit but now live in much more remote country and would like to go 55w kit on my 2012 quad....

Not seeing any major issues now that the ballast recall has gone through, what kit did you have before?

I had the 55w Digital HID H13 kit for the 09 CTD. Could only get the passenger light to work regardless of how I hooked up harness. Ended up trading in with truck when I went gen4.

I just installed the MaxLux 35w kit last night, figured I'd post quick with a few lessons I learned.

First, not having a socket set is a ****. Just moved recently and couldn't find mine, so I had to go at all the bolts with an adjustable wrench. Honestly that took the most time.

A great place for mounting the ballasts, particularly if using double sided tape like I did, is right behind the headlamps on both sides, attached to the painted frame rail section I guess you'd call it, that sort of goes up on an angle. I didn't take any pics unfortunately as I was trying to get it done as quick as possible, but it's a perfect spot. I mounted my ballasts flush to the edge, which gives the wires plenty of slack to run down below and back up to the back of the headlamp. Having the wires dip down into a U shape like that prevents any water wicking up toward the headlamp assembly also.

Also, I can only assume they don't adjust the headlamps from the factory, but man are mine way off right now. Checked against the garage door from about 8 feet away, the driver's side lamp is about 8-12 inches higher than the passenger side. Almost as if they had it set up for RHD! I bet the factory halogens wouldn't have been so bad if they had adjusted them properly from the factory. I'm going to raise the passenger as much as I can and then maybe see if the driver's side needs to go down if I start getting flashed a bunch.

A lot of people get nervous about the HIDs being turned on and off in relatively short periods, but in my opinion the only thing you really have to worry about is stuff as quick as flashing the beams. Illuminated entry, lights on with wipers etc. should all be fine. The only thing I haven't seen yet is the auto headlamp feature. In previous vehicles with auto lights that I've done drop-in kits on, I basically lost auto lights completely. Either that or one would come on and the other wouldn't, that kind of thing. We will see how the Ram handles that.

All in all, it seems a very intimidating install if you've never taken one of these beasts apart, but it was actually really easy and quick. Took me about an hour including about 5-10min of troubleshooting time when I got the polarity of the wires that connect the ballast and the factory headlamp connector wrong haha. If I was to do it again, and had either a 10mm ratchet or better yet an electric impact, I think I'd easily be able to knock it out in a half an hour to 45min.

Hid's are awsome!!.. They just really belong in a projector housing " Off topic" Led's are cool as well, but remember they generate No heat.. so if it is snowing.. the snow wont melt.. and you wont be able to see.. Just putting it out there. And those don't look like they glare to bad for not being in a projector housing.

That kit is over priced and a pile of junk. When you call them to tell them it stopped working after a month of installing it. It was your fault and how you installed the kit junk

You have me confused with someone else. Please get your facts straight before coming in here and bashing my product.

If you still feel that it was indeed a RetroShop kit, then by all means, please forward your order number to me at [email protected] - I'll defininitely get you cared for. But.....I am betting that your kits came from another vendor with a similar name...but not mine.

the full harness requires a bit more work to install, but is the "tried and true" method - where its pulling power from the battery. Canbus adapters just plug in, done.

Juat wondering about the install. I dobt have your retro kit but i have a hid kit with slim ac ballast and the cap that is for the flicker issue and i put all of that inside the housing and didnt need to drill a hole in the cap. Been like that for over teo years now with no issues. Couldnt you just put the hid kit ballast and all inside the housing? No need to drill a hole in the cap. But my main question is that I plan on doing a Led conversion kit and the Led buld is to long with the fan on it and wondering can I leave the back over off or does the cover need to be on to seal the headlight from water or dust?
