I'm looking for information that will explain to a non-techie like me how the 4x4 system on the Ram works, and what the different modes (auto, lock, low) do exactly.

I think I have a pretty good idea on when to use what mode; I would just like to know more about what goes on when I engage the different modes.

Anyone?

If you have the owners manual it actually explains it very well

Use 4wd auto in possoble slick spots (it has to slip before it locks the front tires in so you can still turn on dry ground) 4wd lock is for all time slippery conditions such as snow, ice, mud. 4wd lock(also called 4wd hi) is full time lock and if you try to turn on dry ground it will bind and hop putting a lot of stress on your drive line. And 4wd low is for climbing or pulling things out trees, other vehicles ect. 4wd low gives you a lower ratio.

The binding doesn't happen with the on demand system which if he asked about 4 auto he has.
4 auto engages the front axle and will engage the clutch in the transfer case when wheel slip is detected.
4 lock is essentially the same thing only less wheel slip is required.
4 low is the same as 4 lock with a gear reduction.

4 auto is best if you want to do donuts in a snowy covered field. I learned this yesterday and had a whole lot of ram fun. catchwas good to get you going and then disengaged to do the donuts. I had some nice 4 wheel drifts going in the donuts.
