If 0W is bad for hot climates, why does the 6.4 run 0W-40?

on the newer manuals, 5-30 is only rec. on the 2500 and 3500 is primarily loaded over 14000#, not for normal everyday use.

NOTE: For 2500/3500 trucks with a 5.7L engine operating
under a gross combined weight rating of 14,000 lbs
(6 350 kg) or greater, SAE 5W-30 meeting FCA Material
Standard MS-6395 engine oil is recommended for all
operating temperatures.

Because 0w40's have different rules for thier formula then 5w30 that are hampered by API and CAFE rules, I'm not sure you can find an api 5w30 with 250ppm moly and they like zinc as well. FCA really wants 5w30 in the crank, and basically 0w40 is a 5w30 in the crank case. UOA's show 0w40 spends at least 85% of it's useful life as a 5w30. The zero winter rating is from vii's that shear making it a 5 winter rating, and the viscosity shears away from it's 12.5-13.5 to below 12.5 operating temp visc within a couple weeks.

Thanks 6.7,that's the same photo I was trying to get on here. In my 2014 manual though it's on pg 677,wonder why it's a different page number in your 2014 manual. My truck is a late Sept 2014 built truck, not even sure why it's a 2014,i figured it would be a 2015 with a Sept build date, out of curiousity do you know the build date on your 2014,it's on the drivers door stickers
Ya, not sure about the page # difference, maybe we have a different version/copy? My truck is what I’d consider an early ‘14, build date was September 2013.

Just checked the last page and it shows I have version 4, 806 pages total. I haven’t printed the whole thing yet but I saved a digital copy.......that’s a lot of ink to be printing this at home.

Phone this number and you should get the printed manual "free". Last page on my printed manual says 1st edition, wonder if I got the early version, because I phoned the day after I bought the truck back in 14.I'd already been clued into how to get the manuals on my 13,so as soon as I had the 14 at home,i phoned for them

US 1-800-423-6343

Canada 1-800-387-1143

Have the last 8 digits of your Vin handy, and make sure you tell them you're the first registered owner of the truck, even if you aren't,lol

Different one.You actually get a couple manuals, but the printed owners manual is in excess of 700 pages, and has a lot of info in it.If you received a CD disc with your truck, look on the backside of it down in the very bottom,in the really small print under where it says "Important" and you'll find these numbers, you might need a magnifying glass to read them as FCA doesn't make it easy to see or find them, lol

to hell with the dealers....
just hit 14k on my 17. 12,500 of it has been on redline 5/30. no hot tick, no start up tick. and not even a restart tick after moving it across a driveway a couple of times. oil is at 49 psi at idle hot about 210F. so far so good. thankfully.
as coach John Gruden says- "knock on wood if you agree with me."

I agree to hell with the dealership and whatever the manual is saying.
I use the 5 qt. jug of 0-40w and two qts. of 15-50w.
No ticking noise whatsoever.
Ran the same oil weight in my 1999 Dokota R/T with 97,000 on the OD when I sold it.

Just for ***** and giggles I dug out my 700pg owners manual. On page 677 are the recommended oil weights for the 1500.Mopar 5W-20 /Penzoil are the recommended oils, but in a paragraph right under that,it also says 5W-30 oil approved to Fiat 9.55535-S1 or Fiat 9.55535-S3 maybe used when SAE 5W-20 oil meeting MS-6395 is not available. It looks like 5W-30 is an acceptable substitute if 5W-20 isn't available. Hey Burla what in hell do those spec numbers mean you old oil guru, lol

Figured i'd repost this for the guys who might of missed it yesterday, but in the big owners manual, that you have to phone to get,it does say 5W-30 is a substitute oil if 5W-20 isn't available
I run 10-30 in two 2018 trucks. One has MDS deleted and one doesn't, no prob with either.

I like it, Bold move and no regret!

Just curious though, you are opting for big swings winter rated to weight, meaning the oil weight isn't as stable if you just opted for the lower swing of 15w50, which is a swing of 35. In other words, why just not use 5w40? I would bet if you did a uoa on a 5k interval or more, the weight would be the same as your mix. Just curious, what brand you chosing? Thanks for the update, we need more examples of people opting to go big.

I phoned them and they gave me this website: www.fcacanada.ca\owners\en.

Download your PDF owner's manual there. I'm assuming there's a similar link for americans.

I have a 2008 with over 300,000 on it and have always used 5W20 . A retired race car driver I know told me that with the wear on my engine that were it his, he would be running 10w30 MINIMUM and perhaps even 40. With the talk about thick oil not lubricating the small clearance parts it is not applicable to an engine with wear and larger clearances. Next oil change I am going with the 10W 30. My 2500 has no fuel saving gizmos on it and does not require the 5W 20 grade anyway.

I start the engine and drive no faster than 1000 rpm until the temp gauge hits the first mark and then it is up to 50mph until it hits the normal mark just under halfway. After that the sky is the limit. Incidentally I live in the country and can get away driving slow as the engine is warmed sufficiently by the time I hit a high traffic highway. I have always observed this with my motorcycles and other vehicles as well as my machinery especially diesel engine powered units.

ALL my engines have lasted a long time and this is what I feel it is due to.

I bought a 2004 5.7 1500 to re-build it. The oil cap on the o4 read 5/30 weight. I found an 05 Hemi with low kms to replace. The oil cap read 5/20. Both motors exactly the same non-mds.

Chrysler pulled similar ******** with the 4.0 jeep motors cut them back to 5w30 for fuel economy reasons when they should actually have 10w30 or heavier in them.
