I have a 2020 2500 with the Cummins 6.7 and 68RFE. I am needing to change the fluid and filters and thought while I was in there I would upgrade the valve body. From what I’ve read, it’s recommended to also put a new solenoid in there at the same time. Problem is that this part is back ordered with no stock date available. So I’m trying to understand how bad it might be to reuse the old solenoid? What problems might this create if any? I am not having any particular issues with the trans at this point so assume the solenoid is still good but is there any way to check it when I have it out?

Thx

I'd continue using the old solendoid, if it was 10+ years old I'd be more inclined to change it while I was in there. I think you will be fine, it's not as high a failure item as they make it out to be.

Awesome. That’s what I was hoping to hear. Appreciate it.

I think you would be ok to use current pack. Worst case you would just need to change your fluid again if you find it’s having issues. No since in wasting money if you don’t have too.

That’s what I was thinking but wasn’t sure why everyone recommends replacing the solenoid. Doesn’t sound like there’s anything wrong with reusing. And since they’re $510 and on back order, this is good news.

Thanks for the response.

It's a known point of failure. I think most figure it they're cracking into the valve body, they might as well replace it. I did. On my '14, the first one went bad around 5 years. I need a new valve body at 10 yrs old, so I just replaced it too.

What's the hurry? The white solenoid pack is universal, which most shops use anyhow if you believe what you hear. So see if a white one is in stock. Since the VB and Solenoid pack are known issues and weaknesses in rfe, in theory with those parts being new, in theory that will also take better care of clutch packs and in some sense it is like a new transmission. It is a small effort for a great benefit, sorry if that wasn't what you wanted to hear. Get the metal thread upgrade, and redline c+ is an incredible upgrade and it compatible. This guy is so good and it is the only one that fits tight in the hole, others are lose, bargain for 6 bucks, yeah you have to pay shipping, but this is the one you want.
