8.4 GPS sucks!

My 2017 1500 limited has the 8.4 Uconnect, and it absolutely sucks at giving the best route. Yesterday it told me I was on an unspecified road, please make a U-turn. I was on a divided highway. It's all the time trying to take me on side journeys to the moon and back. Anyone else have Google Maps or Waze running on their phone instead? Why can't we have compatibility with Waze? I'd sure like to see that functionality on my 8.4 inch screen!

Agree, in my Charger, it had me hang a left, turn around and go right back......
wished we had Carplay and Waze....

The 8.4 sucks in almost all aspects compared to aftermarmet.

I Have the 8.4 no nav. I use android auto and waze. works perfectly.

The 8.4 needs to be updated routinely, like Magellan, so, see if there is an update for it and of course, how much it costs. When mine starts giving me issues I may try to add google maps to my app list and use it. Depending on the update costs of course!

I don’t even use my factory navigation anymore because it’s practically useless. That, or either I’m not using it right, or it’s not set up properly which, there’s no reason for it not to be. It’s just useless compared to Google maps or even Apple maps, which is what I use on my phone.

I agree, built in nav on the 2017 is horrible. I really wish the system could be upgraded to accept Google Maps without having to spend over $1000. But since it requires an entire head unit swap plus a few other items we are stuck!
So I just use Google Maps on my phone

Well, if you have CarPlay or the android equivalent, you can mirror google maps onto your screen.

My 2018 Rand McNally Atlas has not given me wrong directions yet. Last 1200 mile road trip, my UConnect GPS gave me 27 wrong turns. I put it on now just to laugh at it.

Waze requires an IOS of 12.*** or above to work on 8.4 radio. I have waze on phone, old iphone 5, IOS 10.3 so will not work on my 8.4C. However, since I got an MY 19, Use Appleplay with maps and pretty good but there are drop outs some time and forget reroute/detour. U can download Scout and use on the 8.4 but beware, that is like 1/2 maps, 1/2 dating stuff, LMAO...

I also have an ancient refurbished Garmin that I carry on long trip and of course Lifetime Updated Maps, instead of paying FCA money to upgrade, just IMHO.....

And that Garmin is a lot more updated than the Appleplay map ap...

As long as its the '18+ with Apple Carplay. Ever since Waze came out with the carplay update for IOS12 its been my go to for when I drive into town. Most of the time it avoids the ****** traffic, but it's not always smart enough to redirect me to some of my preferred rural routes when traffic gets really bad. That being said it's always been the fastest when I'm actually in the city trying to get around.

Waze works for me. I have the 8.4 non nav in my ‘18 SLT regular cab. I am using an iPhone X with IOS 12.

Apple maps are live (as long as you have service), so you can’t get more updated than that. It also caches you’re route, so if you run into an area with no service, it continues giving you directions.

They do, but I was asking if CarPlay was needed to use waze on the Uconnect.

In other words I guess if that’s the case, I prolly won’t start using waze again because I’m not real impressed with CarPlay. I don’t like how it tries to force the whole hands free texting thing on ya, and wants you to use Siri to read you your texts, and wants you to use the dictation to respond back. That’s why my CarPlay is disabled and now whenever I plug my phone into the USB port under the console lid, my radio thinks I have just an iPod hooked up.

Ahhh, I gotcha.
That’s kinda the whole point of CarPlay, so you don’t have to have any physical interaction with your phone while you’re driving. I have a head unit with wireless CarPlay, and it’s nice that I don’t ever have to take my phone out of my pocket.

Yours has wireless CarPlay? Is that an iPhone X thing? I’m pretty sure my 8+ has to be plugged in via charge cord to make the CarPlay work.

But yeah, I know, it’s to minimize the interaction with your phone but a lot of it, it just moves that interaction to your radio screen unless you can do a lot of that with the Uconnect voice commands; which I haven’t learned to do yet.

If I’m the only one in my pickup then I don’t mind Siri reading me my texts but I don’t need her doing that if I got passengers in there....lol. Somebody might hear something that can’t...unhear...lol.

No, it’s the aftermarket radio. I have the alpine ilx-107, which is capable of wireless CarPlay.
