I drive a 07 1500, and have been testing the new 1500. The eight speed is unbelievably smooth.

Only downside I see with it really is maintainance. The fluid is crazy expensive and the filter is built into the pan which is $275 or something crazy like that.

Just to add/confirm:

It's a 'sealed' (no dipstick) system. (Same as the Ford 6 speed)

The fluid is expensive, and the filter pan is as well. If memory serves, they indicate the trans will not require any service for 100k miles,,, (Same as the Ford)

'Severe' users may choose otherwise, but as easy as I am on mine, I won't address it until 100k... :favorites13:

Mine won't need service. It will be gone at 100k.

The 8 speed is fantastic! I've had an 05 Daytona Ram 5 spd auto, and an 02 durango 5 spd auto along with various cars, and this 8 speed is smooth and powerful even paired with the 3.21 rear.

I recently bought a 2014 1500 Sport with the 8 speed, (my first truck), and I have a question.

When accelerating slowly or slowing down, is it normal to feel every upshift and/or downshift?

I thought with more gears the shifting would be super smooth, am I wrong?

It does downshift to show you down. That's a awesome feature. You can fill it shift more or less depending on how your using the gas.

I was pretty amazed going up and down tall overpasses on the highway with the cruise control on. The tranny is shifting a lot but it's butter smooth and very quiet as the rev changes are not huge and things are seamless. I can spin the tires easy even with 3.21's AND get 22mpg hwy. In town is not so great but it's a big V8.

Define "feel"? If it's lurching or jerky something is wrong with it. Even on a big gear span change at WOT mine is pretty smooth. I love how I can use the +/- gear buttons to give it a sporty feel, it will stay in the gear very well and won't downshift unless you are at low revs and floor it, say going 20 in 4th etc.

It feels like im driving a stick shift or Semi-Truck. I feel every gear change, like if I was pressing down and releasing the clutch. About every 5 MPH increment the truck shifts. So if Im going 25 MPH I'd be already in 6th gear.

Also, when slowing down almost to a stop the down shifting feels like a semi truck down shifting.

From stop or any speed, if I go WOT the truck is very responsive and the HEMI makes it fly.

Mine feels like that, it depends on how in using the gas. It sounds allot better with the flowmaster 50, when it shifts like that.

Concur with everything else said here. I have had a 99 2500, a '06 and '08 1500, and my '15 1500; the last three with a Hemi. This is by FAR the best transmission I've ever had. LOVE it.

It should be very smooth and almost seamless if you are light on the throttle. Try using the +/- gear buttons and see if anything changes. If it's relatively new, go to the dealer and ask to drive a similar truck on the lot.

I would think at 25mph you would be in 3rd or 4th at best/highest with light throttle. Is tow/haul off?

Going through the parking lot at work my 8spd is in 4th doing 15mph, so it really depends on the RPM and how you're using the throttle.
