Sorry, just noticed the year of
Hey how's it going guys new to the forums! Bought my first ram 2014 1500 big horn with a hemi and the 8hp70 transmission. I've been having this random jerking and shuddering when taking off. Sometimes it will throw a checking engine light and get stuck into gear with code P1D96 and P1D8F which are clutch A & B defective. I changed the filter and put all new mopar 8 speed trans fluid in and did the proper procedures. It's random....I can take off from a light and floor it and it shifts perfectly fine and does 98% of the time. Everyonce in a while if I hit the pedal the wrong way it seems to do it also on a hill and when the trans temp seems to be a bit colder. Clutch pressure sensor? As a mechanic I would think the the clutches were bad it would do it every single time.....any help would be great before I have to rebuild the whole thing lol thanks!
Sorry, just noticed the year of your vehicle. Have you checked for software updates? In the model year 2014 there were a couple of updates to the 8HP70 that addressed some of your symptoms.

Dusty

They only say "" A general level position of the transmission along with the vehicle is adequate.""
"A general level postion of the transmission" ,to me still means level the transmission ,not sure how else you'd read it.The only application of the ZF transmission that points the transmission down on a fairly severe angle are the Ram trucks, every other application of the transmission from Audi to the Challenger/Chargers has the tranny sitting virtually level in the chassis,so they don't need the transmission itself leveled,as it's already level. If you look at where the fill plug is located on the 8 speed,it becomes very obvious on why you need to level the transmission
They also mention 100F for a checking temp, which is the same as the ZF engineer said was the better checking temp.
You do know this has been discussed to death already,if you don't like the Green sheets way of doing things, don't follow it,but those are the instructions that came in the box with a "brand new truck specific 8 speed" when i bought one from my local dealer, and i highly doubt they'd of put them in the box if they didn't think it was important.
You also have to realize the majority of instructions floating around are for the applications which already have the transmission sitting virtually level in the chassis, the Rams are the total oddball application of the transmission

For those who have done this, what about the transmission cooler bypass valve?

If the fluid is drained when the transmission is hot (over 160F), I would expect you'd be draining the transmission cooler as well. Yet, as the instructions say refill when the transmission temp is at 100F. In that scenario is it possible you still haven't filled the transmission cooler (the value doesn't open until 160F)?

The way the cooler hoses are routed,it's pretty tough for the cooler to dump it's fluid.Even if you disconnect the cooler hoses at the transmission, you still don't really lose any fluid out of the cooler

Ok. I just wondered because a friend of my son's did his this past summer and almost immediately he started to having some issues. Then someone told him to drive until the engine reaches max temperature and recheck. He said had to add some fluid, although he didn't say how much, but that fixed the issue.

It's a good idea to do 2 checks though, with the second one being after driving it for a bit. Mine has never needed any added on the 2nd check, but it's worth doing anyways, just to be safe

Hey I was just wondering if you ever solved this? I just bought a 14 that is doing the same thing. It has 201000 on it and unsure if my trans has ever been serviced. I'm not getting any codes but the slight shudders when cold.
