Did you re-use the old snap ring (if there is one, I'm not sure, never done this job)? Just asking because I have the kit sitting on my bench. Gonna order the PPE pan and fluid soon to do this job. Do I need to also buy a specific snap ring? Thanks..............
To be honest I was unprepared ,so later I do plan to replace it when the SW headers and pipes are installed.Just thought I would add that, since you don’t know till you open the kit.And if it’s 4wd dropping the shaft does help.lIMG_1276.jpeg

So you re-used the old snap ring then? I 'assume' that's a pic of the old one? Thanks

I'm also from Texas and I get why people want cooler (sub 200F) trans fluid temps. I'm seeing many people from Canada/Wisconsin/etc doing this. Is there a big issue I haven't seen yet, or is it just a preventive thing ya'll are doing? I'd think up north (in winter) the colder temps would be a much bigger issue. Do the snowbirds use block and/or oil pan heaters?

The crazy grades and great speed limits are a wake up call for YankeesIMG_5775.jpegIMG_1046.jpegIMG_0869.jpeg

Yes but after the struggle to remove it ,I should of replaced it for sure and is on my list of ram parts to get.

Do you know the dimensions of the snap ring?
I would like to have a spare before I start the installation.

I suppose it might be worth the expense to spring for the Mopar part, just to be precise.

I've never replaced the snap ring, wash the crap out of the side of the tranny before hand, then use a sharp pick to scratch most of the crud away, and spring for a "good" set of 90 degree internal snap ring pliars, not the ones that use the replacable tips

I'm pretty sure I have a mediocre set from Princess Auto that includes a set of 90° snap ring pliers. They're likely 20 years old or more, and might be passable.

And the CTC ones with interchangeable heads.

That’s what works, but still wasn’t easy because of the spring

Getting the snap ring out wasn't a big issue for me,it was getting the plastic cap out, without destroying it was the part that made me mumble a few words :Big Laugh: If you buy Jesse's bundle package, and the plastic cap is giving you static,i'd just drill a small hole in it and run a wood or drywall screw into it,so you have a handle to pull it out with.
Only downside would be if you ever have to return it to stock and need the black plastic cap to re-install,for say a warrenty claim on the transmission.

I suspect that Stellantis would be hard pressed to prove this mod harmed the tranny.

I know many of the stealerships might make the threat but suspect that could be fixed with the appropriate corrective action, hiring a lawyer.

Maybe you could attach a small hex nut to the plastic cap with JB Weld.

For anyone wanting to have a spare snap ring or extra o-ring for their aluminum cap/plug, links to purchase both from McMaster are present in my instruction file HERE

O-ring

Snap ring

I know not everyone will want to buy them in that quantity, but McMaster is the greatest supply house because they give you so much information. You can get the sizes from their site and look at other sources. You might also put a bug in the ear of Dillyn at 'Your Auto' that he could offer them on his site individually as an add-on.

I think the advantage to the thermal unit being 'non-serviceable' is that the dealer will likely never even look at it, much less tear it apart. A little black paint or grime etc would hide the aluminum cap quite well I think.

I I stalled my Caulk bypass yesterday. What a difference.

Cruising some steep and curvy back roads in 100° Northern California heat yesterday, my transmission hit a maximum of 154°.

Engine coolant maxed out at 210°

This is in combination with the PPE pan and middle AGS louvers removed. I also have a 180° thermostat.
Going to do a other dump and fill today (2nd one in 150 miles). If I don't melt in the heat, I may do the 3rd dump and fill today as well. I'm using Valvoline Maxlife fluid.
