$99 Map Update

Got an email for $50 off the update. Was not anticipating doing an update but at $99 I am considering it now. Just wondering if anyone else has done an upgrade and if they thought it was worth doing?

My opinion: It's a complete ripoff that they charge for map updates, period. A $100 Garmin with free updates for life that you can take to another car is a far better value.

Personally, I love the factory nav. I LOVE having the big screen. Using VR to spit out my next address and I love the prompts and directional info on the gauge cluster. I'm cool with being ripped off if it makes my life easier and more convenient.

Yeah you're not wrong. Having the nav integrated with the cluster and on the vehicle's screen is going to be worth it for many people. I have the luxury of having Android Auto with Waze or Google Maps on my 2018. I just really resent that the factory Nav doesn't have free updates.

I do not believe that any factory nav is updated free so it is not just Ram that is sticking it to owners. But yes I do agree with you that spending the money for the nav (even though it is factored into Longhorn package) should include the updates.

I'm driving a 16 as well, did you notice any changes? Did you call and sweet talk them into your one-time deal and how much did you pay?

I really like the factory nav on the Ram better than my previous two cars with it, especially the directional info on the cluster as you mentioned.

I read somewhere that someone else contacted ramcare... or whatever it's called... and got a free update. So I emailed and asked. Just explained to them I was a 1st time owner and got it certified pre owned and wondered if they'd cut me a deal since the map data was outdated. It had the 2015 maps since it was an early 2016 build and I honestly did NOT realize how much my town and state has grown since then. Entire bypasses, highways and neighborhoods were gone, so I really needed it. I thought maybe I would get a %10 off or something, but they were super great and welcomed me, thanked me for buying my truck and told me they would reimburse me if I sent them a receipt. Sent them the receipt and a couple weeks later a check showed up in the mail for the full amount.

Disclaimer... they were really nice and helpful and I truly appreciated it, but they made it clear, the freebie would not happen again LOL. It was $150

I didn't notice any difference except points of interest and map updates. If I remember correctly (can't find the box) the map data is 2017. That's why I wondered if the offer was for newer maps files.

It's to bad the map files are tied to the truck. It's just a USB stick. I'd appreciate the updated on the date. If they're newer I'll see if I can't snag the deal.

It's too bad somebody hasn't figured out how to hack the system, or jailbreak, the maps so we could share them with each other.

Before I got into the truck to update the maps I thought... hell, I can pop this in friends trucks and update theirs since I paid for it. The catch is, the truck data connection. You have to go to a website, enter codes then you get one back that has to be entered into your truck. I think if it was JUST the thumb drive, there might be a way.

I couldn't agree more. My 2014 NAV was junk the day it rolled off the showroom floor. I use my tom tom with free updates in all three vehicles at a price of 100.00

Here's the thing... I don't think you can share it. When I installed my update and it gave me a code, I had to go online to some website and pop it in and then it gave me a code BACK that I had to enter into the truck. I figured it was registered to the truck and non transferable or I'd have passed mine around for my friends to update as well.

I Updated my map today.. the map was way outdated, it said 2012 or something, the radio is a 2014 model so i dont think the map was ever updated.. it is now...
I did take advantage of the $99 update special and i got free shipping too.

i like being able to use the factory nav on the fly when i need it, i dont like having too much clutter on my windshield with a portable gps, dash cam etc..
the factory nav works fine for my needs..

I think we've established a lot of you think it's a ripoff. For those of us that don't, I appreciated knowing there was a $99 deal.

I don't think the thread was titled "Chime in and tell us you think we're stupid for updating and having a ripoff over priced NAV".

I personally don't like blacked out trim and I think Mud Terrain tires are a waste of money. Accordingly, when I see someone proudly post something about their tires or murdered out truck, I don't hop on to tell them I think it's dumb. To each their own, if you like it, that's what counts.
