OK, I know its August, and I live in Texas, where its been 99-101 for the last week, but I have been noticing that my A/C has been taking a LONG time to cool the truck down. Ordinarily I wouldnt think anything about it because of the heat outside, but we have a GMC at work that has no tint or anything that gets cold sitting idling faster than my truck with tinted windows at highway speeds. Just wondering if its brand difference, or maybe I need to have the coolant checked? I dont have anything freezing up or anything, and the air will eventually get cold, but it takes up to about 10 minutes to get from cool to cold.

I recommend you have the A/C checked for leaks and low refrigerant

2012 w/ 115K miles.

Might have a different refrigerant entirely, I think by the 2015 model Ram had switched over to the 1234yf. The sierra most likely has the older refrigerant which seems to cool better.

That’s what I am wondering. Is there a difference in the compressor or refrigerant, or do I have a problem? I know at some point they switch from a clutch style compressor to the ones that have the internal valve, but I don’t know if I have one of those. I would also think that if I was low on coolant it wouldn’t actually get cold after a while, but mine gets cold, it just takes a few miles wget there.

Yeah I'm not too sure either, my 17 doesn't seem to have too much problem cooling down but NY isn't very hot generally either. Plus I remote start mine for about 10 minutes when it is hot, by then I come out and its very comfortable in there. And I don't even leave it on max ac or anything, just auto climate control set around 62-68 or so.

I generally leave mine on “LO” and max fan speed, but I don’t have auto start so I have to get in to start it, so it’s blazing.

Might want to look into adding the remote start, makes a world of difference for when you get in. When I forget to do remote start my truck on a hot day it's pretty unbearable in there.

While not a solution to your problem, I normally drop my windows for a few minutes to let most the scorching hot air escape. Yes that's the job of the 6" X 6" rear cab wall louvers but 2 windows down trump's that.

That’s one of my trucks too. It does help. Usually I crack them all until I get on the highway, then put the fronts up and leave the rears cracked until it starts buffeting at speed. After a good bit of testing, I think its just freakin hot right now, and it just takes a few minutes to cool off. May not take more than usual, but its just more than I want.

That reminds me though, when I replaced my factory bed, I noticed that the flappers on my cab vents were gone. Wondering if I need to replace the vents since they’re essentially a big open hole between the cab and bed.

Yes replace the rear cab lovers but if they f..d up once I would think out of the box to remediate.
I have a whack of EPDM roofing substrate and would make a flap like a house dog door.
Just needs to weeble open a touch when cab HVAC fan is on.
A little lightweight u-shaped framework bottom heavy would keep out the little critters and 'sects

The factory vent is essential but built too lightly weight.
