I want to buy a topper for my Ram 3500. Around here it's pretty much either Leer or A.R.E.. What is the consensus on these two brands? I use the truck mainly for towing a travel trailer and taking long trips with it. I've been mounting bikes on rails on top of a tonneau cover and would rather bed-mount them inside. Also there's a lot of snow and rain where I'm at. Not looking for bells and whistles; just functionality, and durability.

I have been considering a topper as well and was leaning towards the ARE. ( no personal experience with either ARE or LEER ).
Then I came across "Smart Cap".
I know this does not answer your question but take a look at Smart Cap. IIRC it's price was pretty comparable to ARE with similar features that I wanted.
Good luck with your quest for a topper.

Try these guys, they have a location in Auburn Washington. I have a Range Rider on my 1996 2500 that has been on it since new and still looks perfect, and now one on my 2021 2500. With the Vista version I can put my 2002 Honda Foreman in the back with the canopy on.

Excellent Canopies, made in Canada. They were about 30% cheaper than A.R.E. or Leer, as well built, and more options and available high rise style that still fits through a 8' garage door.

They carry ARE, Leer and Range Rider.

I have had them both, this one the tinted windows was ARE, top rack and carpeted, it was real nice when we went camping or sleeping in back. Friends were in wet tents and I was in warm camper shell, they were miserable at breakfast and I was ready for the day, lol. It was a long bit ago, but I remember getting the carpeted portion for free at least one time because I chose the opposite brand. Cant even remember which one was more expensive at the time, but by chosing the other I was able to get the carpeted version same price. I guess that is when companies competed, who knows maybe these days the same co owns all of them. If you are ever gonna sleep or take breaks back there, I would rethink carpet and tint.

So, I was a Dealer for Leer but their quality of service and most importantly the lead times are astronomical these days.
Leer is roughly running 16 weeks to build caps, and the quality really has gone downhill.
I would recommend the Smart Cap brand all the way. Modular cap and you can see it within days from the right distributor.
Customers are raving about them, and the quality is excellent. Check out the link below.

I've had both as well. Personally, I like the frameless rear window look on the Leer, but I found the quality on both is about the same. The Leer seems to fit just a little bit better, (that's what I have now), but take that with a grain of salt, there were several years between the two

I've had two Leer's, on my '14 1500 and now on my '19 2500. Really like them both. If I was to get another, I would probably go with the Smart Cap though, I think they look great.

AREs on my 11, 16 and 24. Z model, good stuff no issues.

Kept the 11 topper when I sold truck. It's now on the 24.

The 11 topper has Held up for 13 years so far

Do Smart Caps come in OEM colors? And do they make them for HD trucks like a Ram 3500?

I've had an ARE on my last two trucks. Never any problems with them and happy overall.....but I have never owned a Leer either. I do like the look of some of the Leer models a little better. But there are several different options with both companies.

Another idea. I never liked the weight of the fiberglass cap I had on a previous truck, so I recently got this Wildtop cap for ours. Nicely made, and it comes with the cross bars on it so I can carry our kayak. It does keep the water out, something my tonneau didn't do effectively. pretty easy to remove it if needed. Butt ugly? Possibly, but I love it.

I have an A.R.E. The only deciding factor at the time as both were almost identical was that A.R.E included a whole bunch of addition "options" for the same price.

TL;DR
I had an experience that makes dealing with Comcast or Ticketmaster seem easy and friendly. I'd probably make my own (and I hate fiberglass work) than ever do business with them again. Leer and ARE are the same company. Private equity firms are killing American quality, and jobs.

Details:

I recently put an ARE MX on my Ram. With a 4" mid rise, rails for a rack, headliner and fold down window it was almost $4,000.

It was possibly assembled by drunken, blind, idiots. They forgot a part (the flap that covers the top of the tailgate and keeps the rain out). They used the wrong length of gasket material in the windows (the part that keeps the rain out). They drove the self tapping screws into the aluminum window trim so far they destroyed the female threads, and some of the screws just fell out. There was a 1/2" diameter hole in the fiberglass on the front surface, where it faces the cab. The dealer insisted on having my VIN and paint code so they could color match, and in some light it's pretty close.

How this got past any kind of QA check baffles me. I assume they don't check anything before they ship product. It obviously leaks. A lot.

When I picked it up, we only saw the missing part and the small hole. We agreed that I would keep it for 2 weeks then return it for warranty work. I desperately needed it for a trip.

I returned it, and then it disappeared for 7 weeks, with no info from the factory. It eventually came back, but they had no clue they were supposed to fix the window trim, so they didn't. It took an additional week to get them to agree to ship the parts to the dealer.

I haven't gone to pick it up yet, so I'm not 100% sure they actually fixed all the problems.

My dealer is OK, but it's been a constant fight, and I've spent many hours dealing with it. Because the dealership is an 80 mile round trip from my place, each trip (2 extra trips so far) takes 2 hours and costs about $20 in fuel.

It took 12 weeks to get delivery, and there was an $80 mail in rebate that has taken 2 months with no signs of life yet.

ARE sucks in the quality of assembly and quality assurance department. Unfortunately, they are owned by the same parent company as Leer, so there may not be any difference.

They were purchased by a private equity firm a while back. There's a decent pattern of PE firms destroying everything they touch by extracting every bit of value, and leaving a smoking crater behind.

I had a LEER on 2012 Ford long bed 250. The fit wasn't perfect and it tended to spread at the back. I took it to the dealer to reset it but it just wouldn't stay tight near the gate and I had leaks in the back. I added some rubber material which helped but it still leaked in the back. I also had trouble with the lock and the dealer had to upgrade and or modify.

I traded the F250 for a RAM 2500 and bought an ARE. Far better workmanship and no problems with leaks. I primarily use the truck for towing our travel trailer and carry all the extra gear that I probably don't use but thats another story. I did order the winged windows. They lock and I can reach in and get stuff though the windows.
I also added a platform (1/2" plywood that rests on the truck gunnels) for the light stuff when traveling. The opening side windows is one of the best options for us. Good luck on the hunt!

Back in the day ( circa '82 ) where l worked sold Caps among other things , and while not my primary gig occasionally sold and installed them .

Today's prices are totally freaking insane !

1982 , Leer Caps were +/- $399 .

Adjusted for inflation , fiberglass caps should be $13 -1400 .

( Back then , aluminum caps were +/- $199 installed .)

I have a LEER, its very nice.....BUT the rear window of the shell got shattered, and it took over a week for LEER to even respond with a price ($600ish installed) and then had to wait a month for the glass. Nice product, but really disappointed with the customer service there. Wont deal with them again

I have driven trucks with pretty much every brand of top, over the last decade. They are all pretty much the same, and quality varies all over the place irrespective of the brand.

I bought a new topper for my 08, about s year and a half ago. I went with an ARE, because it had the features and rear hatch configuration I wanted. I installed a bedroller in the truck, because I'm getting too old to crawl in and get to teh front fo the bed to retreive things.. And this full width and height rear hatch works well for me.
