So, I just bought a new 1500 Limited Elite and am loving it. Spending this much on a truck, I wanted to get exactly what I wanted. You can imagine my excitement when I found exactly that at a dealer who just happened to be right on the way home from my vacation spot in Montana, along I-15, on my way back to Arizona. I just had to stop in and buy it! In the excitement of seeing it and purchasing it, I didn't pay enough attention to the tires. The window sticker said they were 20", the load sticker inside the door frame said they were 20" and 20" is exactly what I wanted. This will be primarily a highway truck for me with occasional off-road (mainly rough 2-track trails) travel. My thought process is that 20" gives a little more sidewall for protection for the rim and maybe a little softer ride. Anyway, when I got home and started looking things over closer, I discovered that the truck actually had 285/45R22 Pirelli Scorpion Verde tires on it. WTF? I called the dealer (who is 600 miles away) to ask what the deal is. They claim they have no idea why it has 22" tires and I think I believe them. After all, its about a $2000 dollar upgrade and I have to believe they would have liked to charge me for them. I have to admit that I do LOVE the way these tires ride and the quiet ride on the highway. I'm not all that excited about the look (I prefer smaller rim, bigger sidewall) but, after all, it's mostly an on road truck. Here are my questions for the group:

1) What do you think happened here? Screwup at assembly?
2) For my use, will I probably be just as happy with these tires anyway?
3) Does anyone out there have much off road experience with these tires - how do they perform? My main concern is hitting a rock and damaging the sidewall or rim. I don't really plan to be doing heavy duty off-roading.
4) Since the doorframe sticker doesn't match my tires, what psi should I run and do these tires affect the payload rating?
5) Does anyone happen to have a similarly equipped truck and tires they could post the door frame sticker from?

About the payload rating. I am kind of surprised that the payload is only 1165 pounds. The GVWR is 7100 LB and the shipping weight was 5424 LB. Shouldn't the payload be about 1700 LB?

I'm loving the truck and believe that, overall, I'll be happy with these tires - unless I damage them on a rock some time ;-) Any insight or opinions on what the heck happened here and how I should feel about it are appreciated.

Payload does not surprise me. I had a 17 Bighorn with 1222 payload. Everything added as an option reduces payload.

Probably costs more at replacement time then the 20s. May be something to negotiate with the dealer.

Where did you get that shipping weight?
If it's a crewcab limited, I would bet the shipping weight is several hundred more pounds.

As far as the wheels, are you sure they weren't part of a package?
Possible a dealer swapped them off of another truck - that the owner wanted 20's and you got them for free.
Possible that they were put on incorrectly at the factory.

I have a copy of the Vehicle Shipping Order that gives the weight - perhaps they fudged a little ;-) After having built this exact truck online several times, I can tell you the 22s were always about a $2000 add on for this particular configuration. So, I'm not really complaining about getting that option for free. Bottom line is it really doesn't matter how it happened - I'm just trying to decide whether to keep them or trade them out.

If doing the off-roading you mentioned, I would trade them out

Yep, and I was aware that the payload tends to be kind of low on these limiteds with all the goodies. I can certainly live with 1165 lbs and don't plan on towing much. I'm just curious as to the limiting factor. It's not the gross minus net weight which would indicate about 1700 lbs. It's not the tires - they're rated at over 2500 lbs each. Maybe the air suspension? Or the 3.21 diff?

The gvwr is 7100lbs. Payload is 1165.

I bet if you scale the truck full gas tank it is darn near 5935lbs

That's true. I'm just looking at the sidewall and I don't know that that extra inch would do much to prevent curb or rock damage to the rim. I like your comparison chart - I'll have to look for that one.

I would be pissed, the 20" will ride much better and that Pirelli is not
a great tire. They switched them on you, just for that reason..........

Where is the window sticker? That will tell the tale. I got mine online and downloaded it, the printed it off.

I just found this link in another post on this forum...

Simply copy the URL below and paste in a new browser window or tab, then add your VIN to the end of the URL and press enter. If the VIN is still in Ram's system, it will generate a PDF of the factory window sticker.

I dunno... Honestly I can't tell a discernable difference in the ride in our Armada versus the ride in my Ram. I'm sure there is "some" difference but probably not enough to worry about. Now, if you're offroading that's a whole different ballgame.

You may want to contact Stellantis regarding the wheels themselves. The 22" sport wheels that were on my '17 1500 Sport resulted in a massive reduction in payload. As in, my payload with those wheels was only 774 lbs. Technically, I couldn't have 4 grown adults over 200 lbs in my truck without being over payload. LOL

I agree with the swap tires theory, most dealers do not do this Because of the chain of events that DO occur. And not everyone at a dealer knows or cares what other employees did or are doing. I really doubt it was an assembly line "error"! If you agree you will have to live with it. You could always decide if you want to find someone that wants to swap with you (for even money, or?) Step one is for YOU to decide What you want to do. I am sure that there is advantage/disadvantage to both ways you can go.
