Adapting in later automatic trans

I am interested in replacing my 46RE trans with another later like the 545RE and wonder if it will bolt between my 360V8 and 4X4 transfer case. Also, does anyone make a computer adapter box ?
I am envious of the Alison 5 or 6 speeds the diesel lads have.
