Is there such thing as an additive to use that will help keep the system "clean"? I don't expect to be boosting my HP, but wondering if there is anything out there that would be legitimately good practice to dump in the tank or oil every few thousand miles or whatever for the sake of prolonging the engine, better tank of gas, etc... Anything?

I don't know much about the ED, but I used to splash a little cetane booster every fill up in my diesel, my truck ran SOOOOO smooth after. It also will help reduce the soot production.

Stanadyne and Redline make some great additives. Check out 85 Plus or Diesel Fuel Catalyst they look like an all in one, both have winter formulas because of course diesel can gel up in winter if it's too cold. They are more necessary in diesels then gas, they took a lot of the sulfur out of diesel, so it is good to replace some of that friction modifier. I used to use a couple in mine, to be honest it has been so long I forgot, one was a cetane boost. Ask this question over on TDR if you don't get good info here.

Opti-Lube is a good additive for keeping the injectors lubed.

We run this Howes Diesel treatment summer and winter.
http://www.amazon.com/Howes-103060-Diesel-Conditioner-Anti-Gel/dp/B001JT3I0U

in all our trucks, tractors and anything else we can diesel. I simply put it in our main 1000 gal tank and everyone gets treated fuel every time they fill up.

Pushing 400,000 miles on one truck and roughly 18,000 hours on a tractor.

seems to be working.
