I have an 03 ram 1500 5.7L Hemi. Driving to work lost all oil pressure while idling at stop light. Truck sounded terrible then died. Wouldn't start while hot. Will start and run now but there is a ticking noise. Where should I start, and is it worth trying to fix? Truck is CLEAN for an 03, everything works but the heat. Really don't wanna get rid of it. Any advice or knowledge is welcome and appreciated.

Sound's like a cam and lifters ! But no Oil pressure sounds like oil pump stopped
Probably a engine Replacement is in your future ! or rebuild !
but with out hearing it and doing a diagnostic on it hard to tell ! JUST a educated guess going from what you are saying !

Take it to a mechanic. A forum is not the place to solve that issue. Good luck.

The very first thing to do is check your oil level. If it doesn't show on the dipstick top it off and look for oil leaks. The second thing to do is hook up a manual oil pressure gauge to see what or if there's any oil pressure before anymore driving is done.

Don't rule out a bad thermostat ... my Pops old Dodge Magnum had a bad thermostat and everyone failed to take a look at it, one of the neighbors said to check the thermostat and it was bad lol .... replaced it and the truck was back on the road without issues ...

It's 19 years old. You're at crunch time. Spend for an engine or pop for a new(er) truck!

If I could afford a mechanic I wouldn't be seeking DIY advice on a forum.
That was a bit harsh.

Your thread title says you are seeking advice then you ridicule someone for giving you very solid advice. You didn't say from the OP that you could not afford the services of a mechanic.

So people can't come on the forums and ask for advice anymore? ... Why does it matter if he didn't mention in the OP that he couldn't afford services of a mechanic?

Tons of questions and people seeking advice on these forums and they get solid advice without having to mention they can't afford a mechanic ... come on man , aren't the forums to help each other out?

If anyone was harsh it was @ramsare4real , there was no need for that comment ....everyone but him and you didn't provide anything positive to help him out lol .... smh .... I don't get it ...

Re-read the OP. Truck is 19 yo, no oil pressure, sounded terrible, ticking noise, and stopped running...I believe then, and now, the best advice was to take it to a tech. I wasn't trying to be "harsh". It's very difficult for anyone behind a keyboard to diagnose what's wrong with it, wouldn't you agree?

Oil pressure down can be attributed to a bad thermostat, I just had a ford econoline van that stopped on me in the middle of the road, oil pressure dropped, sounded like crap ... the thermostat was on backwards ... I also mentioned my Pops truck ...

I didn't say you were harsh but @BossHogg felt the OPs reply to yours was harsh ... to me if any of the two were harsh it was yours, everyone comes on these forums for help, advice ... and many issues have been resolved and lead to be resolved because someone actually gave advice instead of saying that these forums are not the place for DIY advice .... these forums are full of DIY advice, ideas, solutions everything you can think of ....

Maybe you should reread the OP ... his truck starts now only that it has a ticking noise and it's clean for an 03 .... if someone can give him some ideas why not? I did, 2 other people did ... you didn't right ? ... come on man ... lol

Another thing, that is a new member on these forums and his experience from the get go when he just needed some help, advice was pretty fawked up ... He might not ever come back because he didn't feel like he got any help .... how would you feel if all you needed was help and someone said these forums are not the place to look for it .... not cool ...

That was the best, and most reasonable advice I could come up with. Take it for what is worth, and carry on.
